FISHING PROSPECTS

CONDITIONS GENERALLY ENCOURAGING SEASON OPENS ON TVESDAV Fishing prospects iu most of tho Otago districts for the opening of tho season next Tuesday are generally encouraging, as indicated in the following reports received by the secretary of the Otago Anglers’ Association on the conditions of the various rivers:— Shag River.—There has been very little rain since June, and the river is very low and clear, and a good fresh is needed, especially in the lower reaches. A fair number of medium weight fish have been seen in different parts. Fish have been rising, so the fly should be the successful line. Prospects are not really bright at present and will remain so until rain is experienced. Pomahaka River.—A message from Conical Hill states that the river is in good order for fly fishing. A report from Balclutha states that the Pomahaka should be good. Gore reports that the river is in good order. There is snow on the hills, ahd all other rivers are good. ’ • The Malaura is in Very good order, while the Mimihau prospects are good. It is also reported that the Wyndham is in splendid order. All streams in this district could not be in better condition if rain holds off. The Owaka and Puerua Rivers are low and clear and should provide good fishing. The Kakanui is very low and re* quires a heavy rain. Some big spawning fish have been seen in the river throughout the year. The present prospects are not encouraging for the opening. To the Hakataramea, the same conditions apply as in the case of the Kakanui. Dry fly should be tho popular line. Tlie Waitaki is iu splendid order. Good fish have been seen at tho mouth and the prospects are good. Advice from Geraldine states that the weather is dry and cold. Tho streams are in very fair order, and should remain so. The Opihi will not be affected by irrigation Tor some time; and not greatly for a .year or so. Wet flies are usually used for the opening.
