ROYAL MALE CHOIR CONCERT
- - ■ The Royal Dunedin Male Choir will present a concert in the down Hall on Monday, when Madame Mona Stone, a contralto with a fine • reputation as a soloist, will appear in two numbers—- ‘ Canzonetta,’ from the grand opera by Gomes, ‘ Mia Piccirella ’ (‘ My Sweet Maiden’), and Beethoven’s ‘Praise of God.’ The most serious item on the programme is Pointer’s ‘ The Song of Harold Harfazcr,’ with Mr John Pringle (baritone) in the solo part. It is full of dramatic effect, and is n powerful composition with a wonderful and thrilling climax. Mr J. Pringle should be fully equal to his task as soloist. His brother, Mr D. J. .0. Pringle, will sing ‘ ’Tis the Day.’ A delightful item should be the singing of ‘ Maureen,’ a new Irish cradle song especially suited to Miss Dorothy Mackay, .who sings it with choir accompaniment. This is from the pen of Sir Hugh Iloberton, as is also the quiet and” beautiful ‘ The Old Woman,’ a recent acquisition to the choir’s library and the gift of Miss Gwyn Lane. Iwo pianists will present ‘ Rhapsody No. 2 (Liszt). Another part song, with a solo for a second tenor, Mr D. F. Inglis, is ‘ Cottage Wee,’ always popular with Dunedin audiences. The bass soloist of the evening will be Mr Alan G. Fleming, whoso contribution will be • ‘ Song of the Sea ’ (S. Coleridge-Tay-lor). Four lively part songs —‘The Roysterers ’ (B. Luard Selby), ‘Roll the Old Chariot Along ’ _ (Stuart Young), ‘Rolling Down to Rio’ (Edward German), and the bandits’ song ‘ Companions, Let’s Drink _and Play,’ from Verdi’s opera ‘ Erani ’ —will be the choir’s other items. Mr Oswald Pringle will make his debut with the choir in a. pianoforte solo. The box plans are at Bcgg’s.
