TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Mr Charles Findlay presided at the monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council held at Mosgiel yesterday. CORRESPONDENCE. The Public Works Department forwarded a Order in Council exempting portions of roads in Mr F. H. Cuff’s farm, Brighton road- —Noted. _ New Zealand Counties’ Association asked the council to pass a motion supporting a £ for £ subsidy on roads other than highways.—Received. The postmaster, Mosgiel, asked support to the fund for children’s health camps and health stamp campaign.— Crs Findlay and Kirk and the clerk were appointed to attend the meeting to he held Mr Alex. Ellis, Mossburn, wrote objecting to the use of streets in Mossburn as a racecourse.—The matter was left in the hands of the ranger. Messrs M'George and Gordon, surveyors, wrote re subdivision of lots 19 and 20, block 5, East Taieri (C. Sharp) and rounding off corner of section. —To be attended to. The District Land Registrar forwarded diagram and asked the council if it recognised the portion coloured blue thereon as a public road. —Clerk to attend to the matter. Mr S. Bush, Burnside, drew attention to necessary repairs to portion of Townley’s road—Road to be surfaced. Mr Sidney Johnson, Clarks, asked for metal for half a mile of clay road leading to his place.—Work to be done before next winter, ■ Mr D. M‘Rae, Middlemarch, asked for improvements to road leading in to block VII., St. Taieri.—The Clerk reported that the work had been authorised, and the report was received. Mr E. Smith (Henley) wrote suggesting that before the unemployed were withdrawn from Henley a footpath should be formed through the village and metal provided for the roads in front of the hall and leading to the church. —The matter was referred to the member for the riding and the inspector. The supply of metal was authorised. , ~ . , , Mr J. Fraser (Berwick) wrote stating that his property was endangered at flood times _ as a result of a bank having been raised, and he advised that he would hold the county Council responsible for any damage which might result. He also complained that _ there were large holes in the road leading to his property.—lt was agreed to put the road in order. : M* J. Heenan (Maungatua) wrote asking for metalling work on the road leading to his property.—lt was decided. to attend to the matter.. . The secretary of the East Taien Hall Committee wrote asking the council to declare a parking area near the nail.— Crs Kirk and Stevenson were requested to report on the matter. REPORTS. Mr John Garrett (inspector of works) reported as follows; East Taieri Riding.—One hundred and five yards of maintenance gravel have been run out from the dump at •Harvey’s on the Owhiro-Gladfield road. The drag line has been working in the Silverstream on the section between the Owhiro-Glladfield and Riccarton roads. The Duke’s road ditch has been cleared from the Mill Creek to Riccarton road. North Taieri Rifling.— Twenty yards of maintenance gravel from Milner s pit have been run out’ on Gladstone road. Wingatui and Gladstone roads have been surfaced. . Kaikorai Riding. Maintenance metal has been run out on the following roads:—Wilkinson’s. Wilsons, Blackwood’s, and Dalziel’s. Wilkinson’s, Fernhili, and Blackhead roads have been surfaced. Sand screenings have been run out on Freeman’s road. Otokia Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced 1 ; —Saddle Hill, M'lntosh’s, Otokia-Kuri Bush, Dickson’s, and Allanton streets. . Outram Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced: —D. Medlar s, Loan, Hackett’s, and Allanton to Berwick. Kirk’s drain, Allanton to Berwick, and Hackett’s roads have been graded with the power grader. Maungatua Riding.—Three _ hundred and sixty-five yards of maintenance gravel have been run out from the Taieri River Trust dump at Millars on the Lee canal road, Otokia-Maun-gatua, Henley to Berwick, Munro s, and the river-hank roads have been surfaced, . Deep Stream Riding.—The running out of the schist metal on soft coitions of Bray’s road, Mount Stoker, has been completed for a distance of one mile.' Hindoo to Outram and Lamb Hill roads have been surfaced, and stones cleared from the ford at Christmas Creek. If the weather is suitable the grading of the Hindon roads will be commenced next week. Strath-Taieri Riding.—The washout at the culvert on Dodd’s road, Moonlight, has been repaired. The gravel on the Mount Stoker road has been graded in. The ditch from the Agricultural Hall to Rock Creek has been cleaned out. The ditch has also been cleaned at R. Brown’s, on the Gladbrook Farm road. The Siitton and Matarao road has been surfaced. Main Highways.—No. 2: One hundred and) fifty-seven yards of maintenance gravel have been run out from Milner’s pit, on the section from the Silverstream bridge to Findlay’s corner. The section from Mosgiel to West Taieri Church has been graded with the power grader. The Middle-march-Dunback section has been graded from Middlemarch to the Waihemo County boundary. Schist spalls have been run out on the Shannon Hill. A broken stone culvert at Wylie’s Crossing has been repaired by a 30in concrete pipe. No. 3; Three > hundred and twenty yards of maintenance gravel have been run out from Milner’s pit, on the Duke’s road section. The hill section has been surfaced. No. 4: Water tables have been cleaned out and general surface work carried out. No. 5: Water tables have been cleaned out, and the section from Green Island Borough boundary has been graded with the power grader. The traffic, building, and sanitary inspector (Mr J. Williamson) reported that 18 drivers’ licenses and 33 heavy traffic licenses had been issued during the month. , Seven building permits had been approved. All slaughter houses in the county were in good order, and all piggeries but one were satisfactory. The report was adopted. The ranger reported that 107 head of cattle had been found wandering in the county. Three summonses had been issued,—Received. GENERAL. An application for permission to erect a piggery at Green Island was received from Mr G. A. Brookes. There was also an objection'from other residents of the district ivho were present to support their contentions. The Health Department was represented by Inspector E. Sinclair.—After the matter had been fully discussed it was .decided that the property should

be inspected by members of the council before a decision should bo made. The county balance sheets for the year ended March dl, 19,15, were returned by the Auditor-General, duly certified.
