p||S DR BERTRAM THOMAS, 0.8. E. Dr Bertram Thomas, the Arabian explorer, is expected to . arrive on Monday.. His great desert journey of 900 miles through the Rub’ al Khali, the “ Empty Quarter ” of Eastern Arabia, ■which he was probably the first man to cross, has been acclaimed by geographical societies in Britain and America. His studies made on that occasion added much not only to geographical knowledge, but also to the knowledge of the anthropology of Arab races and the natural history of the regions traversed. Apart from his scientific achievements, Dr Bertram Thomas holds a record for distinguished service as a British Resident and British Political Officer in Transjordania and Iraq, and for five years was Prime Minister and Finance Minister of the independent Arab State of Oman. Under the auspices of the University of Otago and the Otago Institute, Dr Thomas will lecture in the Town Hall Concert on Monday evening, his subject being ‘ The Desert Crossing of Arabia.’ The lecture will bo illustrated by films and coloured slides.
