BOY SCOOTS

DISPLAY OF HOBBIES AND HANDICRAFTS Demonstrating the value of the training of Boy Scouts to carry out useful work, the exhibition of hobbies and handicrafts was opened in the Pioneer Hall last night by the Mayor (Rev. E. T, Cox), who was introduced by the president of the Dunedin Boy Scouts’ Association (Sir Percy Burgood). Sir Percy referred to the high standard of the exhibition, which he considered was even better than last year’s, and stressed the value of hobbies as a method of training boys in selfexpression. The Mayor said that in inspecting the exhibition which had been provided by the industry of the Boy Scouts his admiration bad been aroused by the excellence of the display, which' included some singularly attractive cooking exhibits, an activity he thought was the natural prerogative of girls. The value, of hobbies was indisputable, and he heartily commended the movement to the parents of boys in Dunedin. He hoped that the exhibition would be sue-, cessful, and that it would attract large numbers of visitors, and thus become a recruiting ground for the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements. ■ _ The Acting Metropolitan Commissioner (Mr G. A. Martin) extended the thanks of the executive of the association to the Mayor, the judges, the donors of speefal prizes, the committee responsible for the organisation of the exhibition, and all those who had been responsible for making it such an excellent display.
