Clifford Smiles was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for the manslaughter of his wife and daughter, who were found dead in a gas-filled room in their home at West Footscray on June 14. Smiles was tried previously on a murder charge, but the jury tailed to reach an agreement. At the new trial a verdict of manslaughter was returned.
