AMATEUR BOXING

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Several champions will be seen in ae.l+ TTif IV/fr» r rV»z*«» fn/avf:

tion at His Majesty's theatre next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, when the Now Zealand amateur boxing championships will be conducted by the Otago Boxing Association. The entries number 73, and 18 associations will be represented. Much interest will, no doubt, be taken in the appearance oT C. Gordon, of Patea, the Taranaki boy not only winning the New Zealand and Australasian feather-weight championships last year, but also the Jamieson Belt for the most scientific boxer at the tournament. Gordon is spoken of as a likely' Olympic Games competitor. In his division there will be some great contests, for those entered also include W. Hawes, of Greymouthj who won the Australasian championship in 1933. The welter-weights are a representative lot, and, in view of the fact that he defeated last year’s New Zealand champion (W. G. Parris), much interest shoidd attach to the showing of T. Arbuthnot, of Wellington. Opposition will be keen, however, for the brilliant Aucklander, W. Purdie, will also be competing, and he was a New Zealand and Australasian champion two years ago. The middle-weight, light-heavy, and heavy-weight classes have drawn good nominations, and there should be some bright contests. Otago is represented in all but the heavy-weight class, and some of the local boys are expected to give a good account of themselves. Boxing followers will have further opportunities of seeing in action the Jenkin brothers, of Oamaru, who showed such cleverness at the Otago championships. Particulars are advertised.
