GERALDINE RACES

DODGE WINS THE GUP KIHNOULL SCORES WELL After a dull and threatening morn ing, the afternoon was fine for the opening day of the Geraldine Racing Club’s Annual Meeting, and there was an excellent attendance, including a fair sprinkling of visitors from Dunedin and North Otago. The course, after a long spell of dry weather, was very firm and fast, much too firm for a number of the horses racing. The . Cup, provided- a good race, and the Central Otago owned Dodge scored a meritorious win, putting in a very fame finish to beat the outsider of the eld. Quite Soon, who ran her best race to date.

The totalisator handled £7,268, as compared with £7,121 10s on the corresponding day last year,

[By St. Clair.] Trishna was made £36 better favourite than Sunward for the First Hurdles Handicap, with Fleeting Glance next fancied. Nocturnis and Fleeting Glance led over the first hurdle, which Chrysology hit hard. At the end of half a mile Joppa took charge and led Radiant Rose, Trishna, Fleeting Glance, and Weatherly over the hurdle in front of the stand. Racing along the back Joppa and Radiant Rose were running two lengths clear of the favourite, who was being ridden hard to hold his place, and Fleeting Glance. At the last 'hurdle Trishna joined Joppa and Radiant ; Rose, where Weatherly hit hard and dropped his rider. In a great setto to the winning post the judge was not able to separate Joppa and Trishna. Fleeting Glance was four lengths away third, followed by Radiant Rose, Black Duke, and Sunward. Violenta was made £99 better favourite for the Ohapi Hack Handicap than Disguise, with Greek Vase next in demand. Frontage was slow to find his feet, and when the field settled down Violenta was in charge from Hine Ra and Greek Vase. When three furlongs had been covered Hine Ra stumbled and interfered with Greek Vase, who was knocked back several lengths. Violenta was four lengths in front of Miracle turning for home, and Disguise ran into third place. Violenta was taking matters easy in ; the run home, and Miracle got to within a length of her at the post. Disguise was four lengths away third, followed by Dover Patrolj Hine Ra, and Greek Vase. An inquiry was held into the interference Hine Ra met with three furlongs from home, and the explanation of G. H, Humphries, rider of Miracle, was accepted, Giggleswick was withdrawn from the Geraldine Cup, for which Wino was sent out £66 10s better fancied than Epris, with Dodge a good third choice. Wino at once assumed charge and led Gay Crest, Horowhenua, Quite Soon, and Epris through the straight, and at the mile post Wino was two lengths in front of Gay Crest, with Quite Soon, .Horowhenua, Epris, and Dodge next. At the far turn Wino was still in charge, with Quite Soon, Gay Crest, Dodge, and Epris next. Wino was first into the straight, from Dodge and Epris, but at the distance Quite Soon had his measure. Dodge finished very strongly and beat Quite Soon by half a length. Epris was three lengths away third, followed by Wino, Haere Tonu, and Hunting Go, with Horowhenua and Silver Sight last. Casanova, who was made £129 10s better favourite than Repeal for the Geraldine Trot, gave a lot of trouble at the start, and when the barriers were released lost a lot of ground, and broke badly at the end of two furlongs. Waikitea led but from Master Garry, Royal Crescent, and Repeal, and these four were in front in that order for over a mile and a-quarter. Waikitea led Master Garry, Repeal, and Royal Crescent to the straight, but once heads were turned for home Royal Crescent ran to the front, and at the distance was two lengths clear of Repeal. Over the final furlong Dual put in a very fast run wide out, but failed to reach Royal Crescent by two lengths. Repeal was half a length further back, with Casanova, Pot Luck, and Tap Dancer next. : Kihnoull was backed down to a short price for the Squatters’ Handicap, being more than twice as well backed as Cranford, who was second in demand,

and Tizzy next fancied. Tunneller was the only one that did not get away well, and Bon Tray, Tizzy, and Kinnoull were quickest to show out. Tizzy joined Bon Tray at the far turn, the pair leading the favourite, with Cranford and Rebel Chief next as they raced across the top. Bon Tray was two lengths clear of Tizzy turning for home, with Kinnoull and Cranford next. At the distance the favourite commenced a good run, and just got up to beat Bon Tray a neck. Cranford was two lengths away third, followed by Tizzy, Rebel Chief, and Silver Streak. An inquiry was held into E. J. Finn’s riding of Bon Tray, he being charged with careless riding, but it was decided to accept#his explanation. Concert Pitch was withdrawn from the Raukapuka Hack Handicap, and the betting was well spread, Dollar Prince being £32 10s better fancied than Daring Deed, who was only a little better backed than Golden Dart or Riptide. The start was a very ragged one. and completely spoiled the chances of Dollar Prince, Moneygran, Knocklong, Monipere, Merry del Val. and The Surgeon. Riptide was smartest out of the scramble, and led Rose of Tralee, Kurapae, Gold Cross, and Golden Dart. After a furlong and a-half had been covered Kurapae took charge, and led Riptide, Call Money, Golden Dart, Gold Cross, Madam Pompadour, and Capital along the back and round the far turn. Riptide just headed Kurapae at the home turn, with Golden Dart, Gold Cross. Rose of Tralee. Capital, and Madam Pompadour close up. At the distance Golden Dart was in charge, and he just lasted long enough to beat Gold Cross by half a length. Rose Val was two lengths away third, followed by Riptide, Madam Pompadour, and Daring Deed. . ... Civic was nearly twice as well xancied as Golden Mist for the Orari Trot Handicap, on which a lot of money was shut out on the machine. The favourite began very smartly and led Star Vale, Colleen Wrack, Glen Travis, and Master Garry through the straight. Then Star Vale took command and led along the back from Civic, Master Garry, Colleen Wrack, Glen Travis, and Golden Mist. There was no change in this order until after entering the straight, where the favourite took the lead and drew out to beat Colleen Wrack by two lengths. The latter finished fast and jusl beat Satin Lass, who also finished well, by half a length. Master Garry, Solario, and Red Flush were next.

Wino, Haere Tonu, and Dodge were missing from the field for the Belfield Handicap, and Trivet, who reared up and dislodged her rider in the birdcage prior to the preliminary, was made £164 10s better favourite than Rebel Lad, with Quietly next in demand. The start was a bad one, Trivet and Blazon beihg the last to move. Courtyard led Colossian and Metal Bird out of the straight, and this trio was three lengths clear of M'Heath and Quietly as they raced along the back. Colossian was first to drop out, and after rounding the far turn Courtyard was followed by Metal _ Bird, Quietly, and M'Heath, and this was the order into the straight. At the distance Quietly headed off Courtyard and went on to win by two lengths from M'Heath, who got up to beat Courtyard by a head. Metal Bird, Trivet, and Sky Rover were next.
