Dr Gerald Fitzgerald, who attended the conference of the British Medical Association in Melbourne, will return to Dunedin to-night. Last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre carried a motion of sympathy with Mr E. _G. James (one of its vice-presidents) in his illness. Mr J. Riddle, of Fairlie, returned north yesterday, after a visit to Dunedin, his home town. Mr H. W. Piper, who has been on a business visit to Dunedin, returned to Wellington to-day. Mr W. A. Bodkin. M.P., was a passenger for Wellington by the second express to-day. Lieutenant-colonel P. H. Bel! travelled to Christchurch by to-dayA through express. Dr J. R. Dawson left Dunedin this morning for England to continue his medical studies.

Messrs F. J. Williams, P. W. Breen, A. J. Allen, W. F. Sutton, and J. L. Passmore (Otago), and J. R. Haig (Southland) were passengers on the second express to-day for Christchurch, where the annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union will be held, Mr E. J. Anderson is also attending the meeting. Mr W. Russell-Wood left for the north by to-day’s express, and will act as judge at the Waikato competitions before proceeding to his home in Auckland.

Mr A. P. King, district manager in Christchurch of the Government Life Insurance Department, will retire on superannuation on Mondav. Joining the department as a cadet in Wellington on September 3, 1894, Mr King worked for several years in the head office at Wellington, and in 1925 was appointed office examiner, with his headquarters in Wellington. In 1927. he was appointed district manager at Christchurch.

A New Plymouth Association message states that .Miss Elsie Andrews, a former president of the Dominion Women Teachers’ Association, is announced as a candidate for the New Plymouth seat at the forthcoming election. She will stand as an Independent. . Mr and Mrs W. Fisher (Auckland) and,Messrs E. C. Hartridge, T. Wil-liams,-and W. -E. Reid (Wellington) are staying at the Grand Hotel. City Hotel guests include Miss M. W, Allbank (Auckland), Messrs W. H. Thomson and C. Brown (Christchurch), Mr E. Nimmo (Waikouaiti), and Mr and Mrs J. Dunlop (Invercargill).
