TAIERI COMPETITIONS
FESTIVAL CONTINUED The third annual competitions festival was continued in Mosgiel last evening, when an appreciative audience filled the Coronation Hall. The Rev. N. Samson presided. Mrs F, Wakefield Holmes judged the dramas, Mr E. J. Kerr the brass instrument solos in the unavoidable absence of Mr H. Osbofne, Mr J. L. Thomson the piping, and Air Sansom the mouth organ solos. Brass Solo (four competitors) W. Campbell (cornet) 1, J. W. Craigiq (baritone) 2, M. J. Smeaton (euphonium) 3. Air E. J. Kerr said that all the players played well-known melodies, and played them more or less correctly. The interpretation was not all that could be desired, owing chiefly to the lack ( of experience; but on the whole the performances were gratifying. He had hoped for a larger entry from band members, and urged competitors to engage in constant under their conductor, and so merit higher awards. BAGPIPE MUSIC. (Local competitors only.) Piping Solo (four competitors).— Piper K. Christensen 1, Piper W. Gordon 2, Piper G. Sutherland 3, Piper J. Gordon h.c. Air Thomson, the judge, expressed his satisfaction with the standard of the playing. Ho would have preferred slower playing, he said, but that would no duobt come with more experience. He was well pleased with all the competitors. Their expression was good, and a credit to their training. More would be heard of these players if they gave attention to such details as he mentioned. Alouth Organ Solo.—Quite a novelty was included by the mouth organ solo competition, for which there were three competitors—J. Sutherland 1, W. Sinclair 2, W. Scott 3. Mr Sansom, who acted as judge, said he regretted the third-placed competitor had not given more selections like the other two. His one slow piece was not sufficient. The players were inclined to break the rhythm, and all three failed to some extent in tone. The first prize-taker showed the greatest musicianship. In the one-act play section there were four entries —North Taieri Drama Club, Alos'del Women’s Brighton Women’s Institute, and Taieri Women s Institute. , , „ ~ _ . . The judge placed the North Taieri Drama Club first, and awarded the special prize for the best individual character to Aliss Alargaret Swallow. Further placings in this section will be announced later. The festival will conclude this evening, when a demonstration concert will be given by prize-winners in the Coronation Hall, and the church > choirs contest will be held. The trophies and prizes will be distributed at an interval. In connection with Monday s session the correct awards were :

Pianoforte Solo, 11 years and under 14 years.—Noela Borrow, 91 points, i; Margaret Hendry, 87, 2. Song for Girls, 11 years and under 16 years.—lona Livingston, 83 points, 1; Noela Borrow, 81 points, 2. Violin Solo, under 13 years.—Miss Barbara Henderson 1, Jim Fletfc I. Violin Solo, 13 years and under 18 years.—W. Borrow, 84 points, 1; Jv. AUDougall, 73 points, 2.
