The men’s singles final in the Pacific South-West tournament ended unsatisfactorily, Menzel defaulting to Budge when Budge was leading, 1-6, 11-9, 6-3. Menzel said he defaulted in 'deference to his partner in the mixed doubles, Miss Carolin Babcock, .with whom he played in the semi-final later. While it seemed likely that Budge would win, with Menzel obviously foot weary, there had been little difference between the players. In the mixed doubles Menzel and Miss Babcock won the first set, 6-3, from Miss N. Lyle and Brugnon, but dropped the second, 5-7. Play was then stopped because of the bad light, and the match will be resumed to-mor-row. , Budge and Mrs Van Ryn advanced to the final by defeating Maier and Miss Stammers, 7-9, 6-4. 10-8.
