RAILWAYS BOARD TOUR
INSPECTION OF SOUTHERN ' SERVICES [Pee United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 23. A comprehensive tour of inspection over the principal railway lines of the South Island is to be undertaken Best month by the members of the Government Railway's Board, who will also take the opportunity if time permits to visit some of the tourist districts in the South Island served by the railways. This tour follows on the recent • tour made by the board throughout the North Island, when, much valuable in. formation as to services and their possible improvement was gathered. An announcement concerning the proposed tour was made by Mr G. H, Mackley, General Manager of Railways, who is visiting Auckland. He said that at the conclusion of the board’a I
next meeting in Wellington the members proposed ■ to leave on October 13 for the South' Island on a tour of inspection of the West Coast lines and the Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill sections. They intended, so far as time permitted, to visit the South Westland district, the lakes district of Southland, and the Eglinton Valley, which were developing very markedly from a tourist point of view. Mr Mackley said that local bodies, chambers of commerce, and others interested would be advised of the board’* itinerary. It was hoped to he able to meet as many in tho different cities and towns as time permitted.
