BREAST STROKE RECORD
GEOFF CHAMBERS'S THIRD SUCCESS The remarkable distinction has been gained by Geoff. Chambers, of the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club, of establishing new figures for the 75yds junior boys’ breast stroke three times in one year in his first season of swimming. Chambers, who is the New Zealand junior boys’ 75yds breast stroke champion, made an official attempt on the New Zealand record at the Municipal Baths last night, under the jurisdiction of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, and was successful in improving upon lus own record of 58sec by swimming the distance in 56sec, remarkable time for a junior, and one which is likely to stand for a long time. Chambers was sent away to a perfect start, and, moving with rhythmic precision and beautiful co-ordination, he cut the first 33 l-3yds out in 22sec. Ho left 66 2-3yds behind in 50sec, and, staging an electHSying sprint, touched in 56sec to break the record by two seconds. This is Chambers's first year In competitive swimming, and he has been trained and coached throughout by Mr Alex. Greig. In his first race he won the Otago 75yds junior boys’ breast stroke champinoship, and on January 16, at the Kiwi Club’s carnival, lie lowered Reg. Geddes’s New Zealand junior boys’ record from 59 3-ssec to 59 l-ssec, and a week later he won the New Zealand junior boys’ 75yds breast stroke championship in 61sec. On May 11 he made another attempt on his own record at the centre carnival held in connection with the King’s Jubilee celebrations, and he brought the time down to SBsec. Chambers leaves junior ranks on Setpember 30, and will then swim as an intermediate. The officials for last night’s attack on the record were: —Starter, Mr W. A. Jenkins; timekeepers—Messrs T. P. Williamson, F. J. Townsend, and A. Greig; referee, Mr A. Findlay; judges, Messrs D, Pickard and F. E. L. Forrester.
LOVELOCK’S METEORIC CAREER
PERFORMANCES AT HOME “THE MOST REMARKABLE MILER"
[By Pistol.]
A resume of J. E. Lovelock s principal performances since he left Otago University as a Rhodes scholar for Oxford University is interesting. Harold M. Abrahams; former Olympic champion, describes him as “ the most remarkable miler that I have ever seen. His career has been somewhat meteoric.” Lovelock wont to Oxford in 1931, and In the freshmen’s sports he won the mile and the half-mile, m 4mni 37 3-ssec and 2min 3 3-ssec respecModerate performances even for a freshman. Later, in November of that year, in a relay trial he ran second to Jerry Comes, who won in 4min _22sec, Lovelock doing 4min 26sec—his best JNew Zealand time, by the way, being, 4mm 25 4-ssec, at Wanganui in 1930. In the intervarsity relays of 1931 he ran the first race which gave some indication of his brilliance. He did 4miu 24sec. In February 7, 1932, at the Oxiord sports, fie was again second to Cornes, some 30vds away, in 4min 22 2-ssec, and in the intervarsity sports Cornes and ho ran a staged dead-hcat in exactly the same time. . Abrahams says that up to then indications were that he was a very good runner, but there was no kind of hint that within throe months he would leap fight into the front rank. On May 26, 1932, ho set up a new British record of 4min 12sec. A fortnight later he also set up a British record for three-quarters of a mile of 3min 2 l-oseo, and then he ran second to Cornes in the A.A.A. championships in 4rain 14 l-ssec. beaten by a yard or S °He was chosen to represent New Zealand in the Olympic Games at Los Angles in 1932, and, though he won his heat in the 1,500 metres in time which approximated to 4min ISsec for the mile, ho found tho task of running two hard races on successive days a little too much for him at that stage of his athletic development, and finished but seventh in the final. , _ , , In the spring of 1933 in the Oxiord sports he beat N. P. Hallowed (an American who had beaten him in the Olympic final) in the mile in 4mm 23 4-ssec, and ho won the intorvarsity mile in 4mm ISsec, only l-ssec less than the record , .. His visit to America to run for Oxford and Cambridge against Harvard and Yale and Princeton and Cornell produced fireworks. A 4min 12 3-ssec win against the former in the mile was followed by that amazing world’s record of 4min 7 3-ssec. At Turin in September he was beaten over 1,500 metres by the Olympic champion, L. Beccali, and beaten only by 3-ssec in time which was equivalent for tho mile. . His performances last year and this year do not need setting out in detail, but he beat Bill Bonthron, who was associated with him in his world record run in 1933, several times. Bonthron defeating him once. . ~ Then, this year came his win over Glen Cunningham (who holds the world record at 4min 6 7-lOsec) and Bill Bonthron at Palmer Stadium, Princeton, New Jersey (U.S.A.) in 4mm 11 2-ssee, followed more recently by his two defeats at the hands of the twenty-year-old S. C. Wooderson. . . Lovelock has expressed the opinion that he can regain for the British Empire tho world’s record. This is no vainglorious boast, but the justifiably confident statement of a man who will leave no stone unturned to achieve the maximum of physical fitness, and whoso mental make-up is just right tor such, an effort.
