A BOLD SHARK
WITHIN FEET OF SHORE A sharls more than 12ft long swam about in the surf at Ooogee for nearly four hours recently, and many times came within a few feet of the shore. Scores of people watched it. Attempts to shoot it and capture it were made without success, says the ‘ Sydney Morning Herald.’ Residents of the district said afterwards that they had never seen a shark show such boldness. Bathers, including a number of children, left the water hurriedly about 11 o’clock, when a fin moving ' lazily through the breakers gave the first warning that the shark was present. It cariie inshore until it seemed that it must be stranded on the beach, but it always went out again with receding waves. As the shark cruised up and down a crowd of children followed it, dancing along the beach and throwing stones. It camo within a few feet of the rocks at the end of the beach, stayed for a time near workmen who were erecting a section of the sharkprbo| net, and
then again swam leisurely up and down the beach. A man secured a rifle and fired shots at it without effect.
The shark disappeared for a time, but reappeared in the afternoon. Coogee Surf Club members then attempted to capture it with ropes. When the shark came close inshore the men advanced into the shallow water and once succeeded in putting a coil of rope, round, but it eluded them. Eventually the shark swam out to sea and was lost to view.
