RANFURLY SHIELD
OTAGO’S VICTORY POPULAR CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES Striking testimony of tho popularity of Otago’s Ranfurly Shield victory was manifest' at last night’s meeting of tho Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union. Congratulatory letters and telegrams were received from sporting organisations and individuals from all over the Dominion, every message expressing tho opinion that Otago’s victory was well deserved.
Tho committee of the community singing arranged for tho relief of returned soldiers offered an invitation to the victorious Otago team-to be present 1 at to-night’s session, when the mayor would extend the team an official welcome. —It was decided to hold the matter; over, members expressing
the opinion that such an occasion was not suitable for an official welcorhe. . Permission was granted to the Otago Football Association to display the shield at its representative match at Logan Park on Saturday. On the motion of Mr D. M. Stuart it was decided to present each member of the Otago representative team with a framed photograph of the team. Tho question of arranging a public welcome to the shield winners was left in tho hands of the Finance Committee with instructions to act this week. An offer from a local firm of engravers to engrave Otago’s name on the shield r free of cost was accepted with thanks. An invitation from the management of a local picture theatre for'the Otago team to attend an evening session was left in the hands of the manager to arrange' a suitable night. Several requests were received from various city establishments for_ an opportunity to display the shield in their shop windows, it being decided that the shield should x-emain on exhibition in one shop in the centre of the city.
