RUGBY FOOTBALL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Congratulations to _ the Otago representative learn on finishing up a tour which at one time looked as if ;t would be one of the worst! Now that the coveted shield is here no doubt the team and officials will be feted as is fitting, but during all the celebrations and back-slapping would it be out of place to ask the committee of management of the O.R.F.U. to think for one moment of many others in less fortunate circumstances than themselves? Instead of making a miserly grant of, say, £SO to charity, I suggest that they invite the South Canterbury representative team to play here next Saturday, and give the whole of the gate money to charity. There is no less expensive match which would be such a draw, and the Otago team would have the chance to wipe out the hiding it got at Timaru. I trust that no such arguments as cricket pitches, etc., will be brought up against the proposal, and that the Otago public will get the opportunity of seeing our Ranfurly side in action’ against a very worthy little province for a more worthy object.—l am, etc., C.Y. September 23.
