MORE EMPLOYMENT
THE POSITION IN BRITAIN ■ AN ENCOURAGING STATEMENT (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, June 21. (Received June 22, at noon.) The Minister of Labour (Sir Henry Betterton) stated in the House of Commons that the number of registered employed was at present 1,187,000, the highest figure since 1929. The number of registered unemployed on May 14 was 2,090,000. That was 58,000 lower than the month before, 492,000 lower than a year ago, and 722,000 lower than in September, 1931. Since January the number of insured employed had increased by 313,000. The decrease in unemployment had been greatest in the areas where the heavy industries were conducted. Compared with a year ago only eight of 102 industrial groups showed a higher percentage of unemployment, and in only two of these had the percentage increased by as much as 1 per cent. In some of the basic industries including iron and steel engineering, shipbuilding, and coql, there was a. pronounced improvement compared with last year. Unemployment in the shipping industry had fallen by 23,000 during the year.
In certain industries the position was better to-day than at any time since 1929, and the position was still im-pi-oving. .
