SOUTH ISLAND-MELBOURNE RUN AUSTRALIAN COMPANIES UNABLE TO PROVIDE SERVICE With the object of endeavouring to arrange for a direct passenger service between the South Island and Melbourne during he centenary' celebrations, the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) communicated with four Australian shipping companies. The replies of the companies, none of which is in a position to entertain the • possibility, are now to hand. The Melbourne Steamship, Company, Ltd. thanks the mayor for bringing the matter under its notice, but advises that it has no suitable vessel available to cater for the requirements. From M‘Tl wraith and M‘Eachern, Ltd., of Melbourne, (steamship owners) . ■ the following has been received : —“ We see no chance of offering you a steamer either to bring over passengers for the centenary, or for anything in the nature of a regular service.” The genera] manager of the Adelaide Steamship Company, Ltd. writes to say that he regrets that, his company has no suitable vessel available at present. “Whilst thanking you for bringing this matter under our notice, we would advise that we have no vessel available which would be suitable for placing in such a service,” concludes the letter forwarded by the Australian Steamship l Proprietary,- Ltd.
