Launching Of Waiwera Two More For Shaw-Savill Line

Launched at the yard of Messrs Harland and Wolff Ltd. at Belfast on May 1, the motor ship Waiwera is th e first of three vessels being built for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. Iho other two vessels are sister ships, and will he named Waipawa. and Wairangi. , „ . . The Wanvora is of striking appearance, with a slightly raking stem and a cruiser stern, one ls a shelter deck vessel, with three tiers of ’tween decks, a forecastle, and long bridge erection and a small house aft above which is the docking bridge. The profile is completed by two slightly raked pole masts, •i raidin' ’squat streamlined "motor ship” funnel, and four sets of derrick posts. The vessel has six holds of which Nos. Ito 5 inclusive are insulated. Each hatch is adequately served by steel tubular derricks those on the fore and main masts being capable of dealing with ten-ton loads and the remainder with seven-ton. Each derrick has its own electric winch of the Laurence Scott type. On the foremast there is also a special derrick for heavy lifts up to forty tons. „ . The Waiwera is 535 ft in length, with a 701 t beam, and her tonnage is about IO.iOO gross. The hull is divided by eight watertight bulkheads. The twin screws will be driven by two ten-cylinder Diesel engines, and all the auxiliary machinery will be electrically driven. ... ° Accommodation for twelve passengers is provided on the boat deck, and quarters for the captain and navigating officers are in a house above. The standard of the fittings and decorations in all the public rooms and cabins is of the highest, the state rooms for passengers being provided with all the comforts of passenger liners. . £ The three vessels are being constructed for the carriage of refrigerated cargo from iSew Zealand ami Australia to England. The Waiwera is expected to leave England on September 12, the Waipawa on November 14, and the Wairangi at a later date. , *
