BRITISH FARMERS
THE BEEF INDUSTRY PROPOSED STATE SUBSIDIES Tress Association —By Telegraph —Copyright. LONDON, June 20. The ‘Daily Telegraph,’ confirming the * Daily Herald’s ’ statement, says: “ If it proves impossible to secure Australian co-operation in a wide scheme for the control of meat shipments, the Government is contemplating protection , .of the home beef grower on the lines of subsidies, as already adopted m the wheat and dairying industries. This would be only a temporary measure, ' giving time for a fuller discussion of a permanent system, the Government remaining satisfied that the ultimate plan should be regulated supply and marketing. No plan will be submitted to the Cabinet till Mr Elliot and Mr Thomas have ascertained the Australian views from Mr Bruce.” [The ‘Daily Herald’ said: “The Ministry of Agriculture is preparing to ask Parliament to vote £5,000,000 as a subsidy for beef-producing farmers. , Mr Elliot is abandoning all of restricting. imports, and will pay the difference between the depreciated prices which the farmer is obtaining and the economic scale.”]
