'VARSITY A DEFEATS ’VARSITY B FAST GAME UNDER UNFAVOURABLE CONDITIONS .By 18 points to 6 the University A fifteen defeated University B at the University Oval at Logan Park in a game that, despite the sodden conditions of the ground and the misty rain, was surprisingly fast and attractive. The match was well contested and the play was by no means one-sided, the forwards of the losers playing w!l in the loose, but the A team all round having more finish in their movements. The teams were:— ’Varsity A (light blue). Jones, L/ttley, Watt, Fookcs, Page, APArthur, Lopdcll, Laney, Alacartney, Boyes, Simmers. Chapman, Hamilton, and Green. ’Varsity B (colours). APFarland, Maskill, Roy, Stcvenson-Wright, Symes, Ryder, Emanuel, Sincock, Wilson, Anderson, Alack, Alaslin, Wall, .Borne, and Cucklon. Simmers, of the A team, was injured soon after the start, and was replaced by Strang. Even play marked the opening stages of the game, each side attacking in turn. Fookes and Watt combined m an attractive move for the A ■.team, but a counter-move by the B’s drove them back. A vigorous rush by the A forwards carried all before it, and. following a scramble on the line. UttJey secured and potted a good goal from in front. ’Varsitv A 4, ’Varsitv 80. A kick by APFarland was charged down by Chapman, who came through fast, but tho B forwards saved the situation by dribbling to "halfway, Jolly stopping the rush well. Tho A backs swung into action, and Uttlcy threw to Watt, who raced over for a try behind the posts, -lolly converted. ’Varsity A 9, ’Varsity B 0. Strong attacks by the B forwards had the A team on defence. Green loci the opposing pack to neutral ground. Uttley intercepted and sent out to Watt, who scored again, -lolly’s kick missed. ’Varsity A .12, ’Varsity 80. Strenuous assaults were made by the B forwards, and when the ball was kicked, over the line Stovonson-Wright fell on it to score at the corner. Symes just missed the kick at goal. ’Varsity A 12, ’Varsity B J, APArthur ran from behind a scrum early in the second half and “ dummied.” When close to the line he was grassed by APFarland, but Jones picked up smartly and scored at the corner •lolly’s shot missed. ’Varsity A 13 ’Varsity B J. A spectacular run by Jones was tho next incident of note, but he was held up on the line. At tho end of a rush by the A’forwards Lopdell threw himself over for a try, the kick missing. ’Varsity A 18. ’Varsity B 3. The A’s did most of the attacking in the last ; five minutes, but did not increase their score. The B’s gained another three points by moans of n penalty goal by Symes, the game ending:— ’Varsity A 18 ’Varsity B ... ... G Air J. Aitchison was referee.
