During most of that time the Pakura will be in dock. In recent years many small coastal steamers have been converted to motor ships, and most of the new ships acquired for the coastal trade have also been motor ships. Excluding the large fleet of the Union Steam Ship Company, it is probable that there are more motor ships in the New Zealand coastal trade than there are steamers. DIESEL AND STEAM ENGINES. ' The following note appeared recently in ‘ Lloyd’s List ’: — “ The change from Diesel to steam turbine engines in the Asturias and Alcantara, which has recently been announced by the Royal Alail Steam Packet Company, has led to a good deal of discussion as to whether Diesel engines are suitable for trans-Atlantio trades. “ The White Star Line, who own the two largest and fastest motor liners built in England—the Georgic and Britannic—were approached for their views and made the following statement: — 1 Not only have our two new motor liners, the Georgic and Britannic, completely fulfilled all our expectations for economy and efficiency, but, in fact, they have considerably exceeded even those of the builders, Alessrs Harland and Wolff. Aluch of the extraordinary popularity of these two motor ships with the travelling public is due to their freedom from vibration, regular speed, and punctual arrival iu port. Aloreover, their low cost of running and absence of expenditure on repairs has been an important factor in their financial success. The Britannic was built in 1930 and the Georgic in 1932, and they, therefore, embody many modern improvements which tho older ships lacked. Our experience with these vessels has thoroughly confirmedthe wisdom of the choice of Diesel engines.” VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL. ,-Vim..following vessels are expected to ii.l* AviUiin ra,nge of the .undermentioneej wireless stations to-night:— , Auckland.—Antonio, Aorangi, Dalcairn, Hororata, Karetu, Alatai, Maui Pomare.
