SHIPPING DISPUTE SETTLED

CONFERENCE SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATIONS LATER ON POINTS AT ISSUE [l’kk United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 20. Late this afternoon the secretary of the Cooks anti Stewards’ Union, Mr E. Kennedy, issued the following statement ; “ Following on a conference with the managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company of Now Zealand Ltd., Air N. S. Falla, the Cooks and Stewards’ Union has agreed to man the Maknra and other vessels at present requiring providore hands. “ It has been further arranged that a joint conference with representatives ot the Cooks and Stewards’ Union and the Seamen’s Union will be held at a date in July to be mutually arranged to discuss the question of wages and other matters concerned.” The dispute began nearly a fortnight ago, and led to the paying off of sis passenger and cargo vessels at Wellington, Under the terms of the settlement the union has agreed to man all the vessels which have been affected by the hold-up, and a conference between the parties to discuss the question of wages will be held next month. The final vessel to benefit by a settlement of the dispute is the Waimarino. which has been held up at Wellington since Monday through being unable to replace her cook, who went ashore sick. A fresh cook was supplied late this afternoon by the union, and the Waimarino, which carries a large shipment ot potatoes from Lyttelton for the Auckland, market, left to-night for the northern port. Of the other vessels affected, the Kaimai and the Kiwitea are expected to bo recommissioned during the next day or two.' The Lyttelton express service steamer Maori, which was to have left Wellington on June 9 for Lyttelton in place of the Wahine, is also expected to be recommissioned this week, hut no definite date was available to-night. The -Maknra, it is understood, is to make a trip in the .intercolonial service before she re-enters the San Francisco mail service, leaving Wellington on July 10, but in her case also no definite sailing date was fixed to-night. The Monowai and the Maunganui arc at present undergoing overhaul and survey at Wellington. The Monowai, on her present schedule, is to resume her running in- the intercolonial service, leaving Wellington on August 10, while the Mnnnganni’s next trip to San Fyancisco will be from Wellington on August 7.
