DUNEDIN ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
Considerable diversity of interest •characterises the programme selected for the Dunedin Orchestral Society s second concert ot the 193-1 season, which . will be held in the Concert (Chamber on' Saturday the 30th iiist., at 8 n.m. Including as it does such works as the ‘First Movement of Tschaikowsky’s Piano Concerto Waginer’s .‘ Rienzi ’ overture. Mendelssohns Fingal’s Cave’ overture, Ihe Dance,’ ‘ .Willow Song, and Military March ’ from Coleridge laylor s * Othello ’ music, Edward German s [three ‘ Nell Gwyn ‘ dances, and other items by Rachmaninoff. Massenet, and (Wagner, the list of music to be performed will contain works which have ja wide appeal. . The ‘ Rienzi ’ Overture is one of tho least complex of the composer’s works. Its themes tiro easily recognisable by the average listener, who will have little difficulty in identifying the characteristic qualities of the theme ot Reinzi’s prayer for the people and of (those themes associated with the cry bf the Roman citizens for freedom and She call to arms. The same composers fere hide to Act 111. ‘Lohengrin ’contains some of the best, known or ins [music. The contrast between virility land tenderness is here well marked, land 1 the brilliance of tho orchestral [writing combined with the attractive huality of the thematic material makes phis work deservedly popular. In (striking contrast to these Wagner extamples is Mendelssohn’s ‘ Hebrides or f Fingal’s Cave ’ overture— composed hfter a visit to Eingal’s Cave, which Mendelssohn describes a.s affecting him m an extraordinary way. Without giving too literal an interpretation to this [music, one may say that the composer (succeeds in conveying his impressions to the listeners with marked success. Tschaikowsky’s magnificent ‘ Piano Concerto in B Pint Minor ’ is described fey Hans von Bulow as “ lofty, strong, (and original.” To the eminently satisfying effect of the composer’s orchestral style is here added some fine Work for the solo instrument. Miss [Winifred Gardner will be the solo pianist on this occasion. With Miss Ethel Wallace, F.T.C.L., as _ soloist the * Meditation ’ from 4 Thais,’ by Massenet, for solo violin) and orchestra, will prove very attractive. Rachmaninoff’s well-known 4 Prelude in .C Sharp Minor ’is also included. The ever fresh ‘ Nell Gwyn ’ dances of Edward German, and three attractive pieces from Coleridge Taylor’s ‘ Othello htusic will complete the orchestral section of the programme. The vocalist for the evening is Mr Denis Dowling, [who will sing the ‘Prologue’ Irom * Pagliacci ’ and ‘Largo al Factotum from ‘ The Barber of Seville.’ The Conductor will he Mr T. \ernon Griffiths,.M.A., Mus.B., (Cantab.),
