The mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) returned 1 yesterday afternoon from the north after attending a meeting of the Municipal Association in Wellington. Sir Charles Statham left this morning for Wellington to prepare for his duties as Speaker in the approaching session of Parliament. Commissioner Cunningham came to this morning from the south, and is to be farewellcd by the Salvation Army to-night, leaving for Waimato to-morrow. . Mr G. B. Ogilvie started this morning for a visit to Greymouth. The Rev. W. Saunders, intending to spend a month with his son, Dr Saunders, at Eltham, left by the 11.35 train to-day, accompanied by his daughter, who is' to stay a fortnight with Mr and Mrs J. L. Saunders at Wellington. Mr A. V, Shorter, general manager of the Atlas Assurance Company, who has _ been visiting Dunedin,, left for Christchurch this morning on his way back to Wellington. ' After twenty-three years as chairman: of the Technical College Board, Mr T. Scott is to retire from that position following the August meeting of the board. Mr Scott announced at yesterday’s meeting of the board that failing health made it impossible for him to discharge the duties of chairman adequately, but intimated that he would be quite prepared to be associated with the board as a member.

Reference to the retirement of Mr D.H. Cameron from the literary staff of the ‘ Otago Daily Times ’ was made by the Chairman of the Dunedin Manufacturers’_ Association (Mr J. Hogg) at an executive meeting, held yesterday. A' resolution congratulating Mr Cameron: on his retirement, and expressing appreciation of his services as a pressman in Dunedin, was recorded. The meeting also wished him every happiness in his retirement.

Dr J. Carmalt-Jones lias been appointed chairman of the Professorial Board of the University of Otago, following the resignation of Dr R. J. T, Bell.

Mr James Wallace was to-day reappointed by the Otago Education' Board as its representative on the University Council. The board also congratulated Mr W. R. Brugh on his election to the council as representative of the high schools. Miss Dora de Beer was appointed as the delegate of the Otago University. Museum, at the International Congress of Ethnological and Anthropological Studies at London by yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the University Coun. cil.

Mr L. J. Wild, M.A., B.Sc., principal of the Feilding Agricultural High School, has been elected president of the Royal Agricultural Society of New, Zealand.

Dr Stanley Batchelor, who recently retired from the lectureship in clinical surgery, is to be sent a letter of recognition of his services by the Otago University Council. At yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the council Dr James Fitzgerald said Dr Batchelor had given’ distinguished service to the University ,■ He had been lecturer in clinical sur. gery for twenty-four years, and for thirty years ho had been on the stall of the Hospital Board. Owing to the regulations adopted by the Hospital Board, Dr Batchelor’s period of service had expired. The Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) said every member fully recognised the value of Dr Batchelor’s services. At yesterday’s meeting of . the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty, to Animals, the chairman (Mr Crosby Morris) referred to the death of Mrs Saunders, wife of. the Rev. W. Saunders (a member of the society). It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives.

A motion of condolence with Mr R.Thompson in the death of his wife wa_s carried at last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The president (Mr E. L. Macassey) stated that a letter of sympathy had already been sent to Mr Thompson, and members stood in silence for a moment.

Mr A. Edward (London), Messrs W, H. Preston, C. Chambers, W. Mauson (Wellington), and Mr R. David (Christchurch) are guests at the Grand Hotel.
