MOSGIEL RAILWAY SERVICE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l would like to know why the Railway Department sends out a long, slow-moving train in front of and almost at the time the 12.15 Mosgiel train is due to leave Dunedin, thereby delaying the workers’ train all the way to Mosgiel. This has been the case on two recent Saturdays. I would also suggest that another carriage be put on the 4.20 p.m. Mosgiel train. Very often women and children have to take up second class smoking accommodation, and the school children joining the train at Caversham often take up the only available first class accommodation'. In view of the fact that we pay a much heavier suburban rate than is charged in some of the cities further north, we expect a little more consideration as to time-table and accommodation.—l am, etc., Travel By Rail. June 18. [We are informed that it is not the practice generally to allow a slowmoving train to run ahead of passenger trains, but unfortunately, owing to the restricted speed of six miles an hour at Kensington, where the recent accident occurred, difficulty was experienced on two occasions by a goods train being unable to keep clear of the 12.15 p.m. Dunedin-Mosgiel Saturday train. This speed restriction has now been removed, and no delay in this connection will occur in future. It was found that more accommodation was necessary on the 4.20 p.m. DunedinMosgiel train, and an extra car has already been provided.—Ed. E.S.]
