SUCCESS Of SCHEME , OVER 200 EMPLOYED IN OTAGO “ I think it is a great thing for teachers that they are able to get a whole year’s work, although at a small wage,” said Mr James Wallace, chairman of the Education Board, when commenting at to-day’s meeting on the success of the rationed teaching scheme. The Minister, he said, was to be again thanked for accepting the advice of two or three boards and introducing the scheme. The following are, the figures as at May 31 concerning rationed teachers in the Otago district; — ‘Employed in lieu of probationary assistants at the rationed rate, 43. Employed as relieving teachers: (a) At scale rates, 10; (b) at rationed rates, 30. Employed as additional assistants at the rationed rate, 108. Employed with high school boards: (a) At scale rate, 1; (b) at rationed rate, 4. Not employed at all because of University, ' home, or health reasons, 14. A total of ‘2lO teachers is employed under the scheme. Eleven teachers have received permanent appointments for the first time or withdrawn from the • service since the beginning of the year. This time last year there were 190 teachers on the board’s unemployed register, 93 of whom were employed under the rationing scheme then in _ force, while the re'maining 97 were without work.
