ART GALLERY

SOCIETY’S ANNUAL REPORT

The annual report of the council of tho Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society states:—

The death occurred during tho year of Mr D. E. Theomin. one of tho society’s earliest members and president for several years. He was a generous friend to tho Art Gallery, and his wise counsel will be greatly missed. The council records with pleasure tho success which attended tho exhibition of loan pictures held in the gallery during tho month of October, and desires to express its very sincere thanks to those who at considerable inconvenience lent their pictures. The attendances at tho gallery show a very considerable increase, 22.419 visitors being recorded, as against 16,150 for tho previous year. The loan exhibition was largely responsible for the increase., A most encouraging feature of the year’s work has been tho increase in tho membership of the society, seventy-three new members having been secured. Tho following pictures and other exhibits have been added to the collection;—Presented by Mr and Mrs M. Stuart Holmes, ‘ Contrast!,’ by C. Vcrno (oil); presented by Dr Colquhoun, a landscape by E. M. Wimperis, R.I. (water colour); presented by Norman G. Clark, of Melbourne, ‘ Headlands, Sydney ’ (showing eastern end of Goat Island), by Lloyd Rees (pencil drawing), “The Drake’’ jug (Royal Doulton porcelain), “Tho John Peel ’’ loving cup (Royal Doulton porcelain); presented in accordance with the wish of tho late Mrs M. E. Sleigh, a collection of china comprising twenty-three pieces. With tho passing of Mrs Hockcn the T. M. Hocken bequest to tho amount of £736 Os 6d has become available. Though the financial year closed on January 31 the exhibition of the first loan collection of contemporary British art, organised by tho Empire Art Loan Collections Society, held prior to the annual meeting, calls for brief mention. During the twonty-two days the pictures were on view over 6,000 attendances were recorded, and it is felt the collection has done much to stimulate an increased interest in art in the community.
