NURSES' MEMORIAL FUND

cmmittee's annual mm The seventeenth animal report of the New Zealand Nurses’ Memorial Ifund Committee for the year ended March 3T"states:— On April 1, 1033, we had 20 annuitants oil our pay roll. During the year two of these dropped out. but four new names were added, so that on March 31. 1934, we had 28 annuitants on our list. During the year the amount disbursed in annuities and relief to nurses was £1,237, which is less by £lO3 than the figure for the previous year, but this curtailment of annuities has not in any ease involved hardship to the annuitants, as they had become eligible for the' old age pension, and with our .supplemental grants were*better off than before. At present the monthly payments to the annuitants pn our list amount to about £lO5, as against £IOO a year ago—a total of £1,260 a year against an assured income of less than £l,lOO, and this deficit and any claims for temporary grants have to be met by subscription.

The interest on investments shown in the balance appears at £913, a reduction of £3lO from the amount shown in last year’s figures. This difference is accounted for in part by the reduction of interest on Government securities, but the alteration in dates of payment also affects the figure unfavourably so fas as the past year has been concerned. A legacy and two life membership subscriptions have benefited our capital account, but, as Was the case last year, the committee could not have met the appeals made to them were it not for the contributions made by the nursing profession. During the past year the various nursing organisations have contributed £31)0 to our funds, as against £234 during the previous twelve months —an increase of £136. Contributions from the public of £53, of which £2l came from two individuals, do not indicate a due appreciation of what is owed to a profession on which they rely in times of trouble. The cost of administration of the fund has been £27 6s 9d, an amount slightly in excess of last year, owing to replenishing depleted stoclcs of stationery. The amount is 2.2 per cent, of the funds disbursed.
