CROMWELL ENDOWMENT LANDS
RATEPAYERS' RESOLUTION , ’The topic of conversation in Cromwell for some time has been the renewal of the lease of the Cromwell Borough Endowment Lands, to the Cromwell Development; Company Ltd., and following representations made to the Minister of Mines by the Cromwell Mining Association in regard to the terms of the lease, a meeting, of the ratepayers of the borough was ’held in. Cromwell Council Chambers on . Saturday evening, when the following resolution was carried unanimously:—“ Resolved that, this meeting of Cromwell ratepayer's is of opinion that the Borough Endowment Lands should not he leased in such a manner as to alien, ate for perpetuity such lands, and that the Minister of Mines be urged to see that provision is made in the lease now submitted for the Governor’s approval, to provide for the, council withdrawing from the lease, on equitable terms,-, any portion of. such ' lands as it may require for other purposes; and further that, as the lands are situated within a mining district, and the Cromwell Borough Council having expifessed itself as sympathetic to mining, proper provision should be . made in the lease to prevent the lessee in any way hindering mining activities.” It .was decided to forward a- copy of the resolution to the Minister of Mines and also a copy to the borough council. So that- the representations might ■be -received in Wellington in time, it was decided to send a night letter to the Minister.
