POOR SCORING
AUSTRALIA V. THE GENTLEMEN KIPPAX SHOWS FORM Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 16. Tlie weather was fine and the wicket good for the match between the, Australians and the .Gentlemen. The latter won the toss. The Australian team is:—Woodfull, Brown, M'Cabo, Darling, Kippax, Bromley, Chipperfiekl, Barnett, Grirnmett, Wall, Ebeling. Walters, who is captaining the Gentlemen, and Dawson opened, and when half an hour had produced 17 runs the latter flicked a bumper from Wall, and was nicely caught at first slip. A few overs later Walters was caught at the wicket. Two for 28.
Both Wall and Ebeling bowled with plenty of life. Grimmett, relieving Wall after an excellent spell of nearly an hour, immediately troubled Holmes, whom he bowled, and four wickets were down for 49. Valentine meanwhile hit Grimmett for two 4’s, and then drove him to the on for a beautiful 6 before he was caught in the slips. Five for 57. Lowndes and Robins survived until lunch.
There were 12,000 spectators after lunch. Wall and Ebeling resumed, and the former crashed through Robins’s defence. Six for 72. The bowlers at this stage were emphatically on top, but Lowndes and Brown were putting up a stubborn fight to retrieve the situation. Brown’s bright innings ended when Kippax judged a running catch in the outfield. Seven for 120
Lowndes and Clay bit out finely in a partnership which was worth 46 runs, when Lowndes was bowled. He batted for 130miu. It was a solid, chanceless innings. The miserable innings lasted 195 min. Woodfull and Brown opened for Australia to Read and Holmes. Twentytwo runs were scored in fast time, of which Brown collected 20, when he put his leg in front. M’Oabe, after a perfect cover drive to the boundary, tried to repeat the shot and had his off stump rooted up by an inswinger. Two for 29. Read, bowling fast and short, gave Woodfull and Darling uneasy moments, but he became erratic and was taken off. Darling was unusually quiet. The pair added 35, when Woodfull played one on.
Darling then cut, drove, and glanced confidently, raising 100 after ninety minutes. He hit Read for 6, but in the next over, attempting a big hit, he was bowled. Four for 109.
The crowd of 18,000 was delighted towards the close of play to see the best batting of tho day from Kippax and Bromley. The former played his most fluent innings of the tour before he was caught behind the wickets. Chipperfield came in, but soon lost Bromley, who was brilliantly caught off a hot drive. Six for 154.
Chipperfield and Barnett steadily played out time. The innings thus far has lasted 135 minutes. Details:— GENTLEMEN. First Innings. Walters c Barnett b Wall ... ... 15
