H. 5.0.8. v. ’VARSITY B. In a game marked by clever slick work and fast play High School Old Boys met and defeated ’Varsity B at Tonga Park. At half-time the scores were ‘2-0 in favour of ’Varsity B, a goal scored from a rebound off an Old Boy’s stick and a good shot by Service. Old Boys rallied strongly in the second half, and dominated the greater part of the play, good work by the" forwards keeping ’Varsity on the defensive. Old Boys' first goal came after sustained pressure of ’Varsity’s goal, C. Gray netting. Fast, open play continued, and after a good solo effort D. Hanning equalised for School. High School continued to attack strongly, and from a centre shot in mid-air W. Martin put Old Boys ahead with a clever shot. Old Bovs 3, ’Varsity 2. Time was called with Old Boys attacking strongly. ALBANY v. ’VARSITY A. This game was played on Tonga Park No. 1. and after a fast and exciting struggle Albany ran out the victors by 3 goals to 0. From the initial bully ’Varsity attacked, but Whitburn cleared, for Ward to pass on to Memung. The forward line then started passing, but Hayward nullified the effort, and sent his forwards away m a fine dash, only to lose control when in a promising position. E. Densen fielded -well, and transferred to Hey, ■who made a strong dash up the right wing before putting in a good centre. The goalie rushed out, and kicked clear, and Hobson completed the clearance by hitting well up field to Botting the winger making a determined raid on the Reds’ goal. Twose saved well. Eaton received, and set up a strong attack, which had Albany in difficulties, but Ward got back in the nick of time to save. Then Albany opened the scoring. Dey. J. Densen, and Rennick went the full length of the field, for J. Densen to beat Bickerstaff with a good shot. Albany 1, ’Varsity 0. From the bully Albany attacked, but the Blue was safe, end Albany had to get back smartly to keep ’Varsity out. Twose was playing a good game, and kept his goal clear. There was no further score when the half-time whistle sounded. The Reds attacked from the bully, second half, but Allen cleared to Rotting, who was robbed of possession before he could get going. Albany were playing at their best, and nullified all the ’Varsity attempts to get going, although they made some determined dashes down each wing, and on two occasions in quick succession Botting just missed with good shots. Albany attacked strongly, and after a good effort Rennick found the net to make the score: Albany 2. ’Varsity 0. ’Varsity then went away, but could not penetrate the Reds’ defence, which was very safe. Whitburn was clearing well with powerful shots. Ward found it hard to clear, so short passed to Curtis, who beat three or four opponents before passing on for Meinung, Ainger, and Rennick to go away strongly; then the ball went right across field to Dey. who centred strongly. Tim goalie rushed out, but missed his kick, and Meinung, who had followed in fast, scored. Albany 3, ’Varsity 0. Messrs W. M’Queen and Wheatly ably controlled the game. SECOND GRADE. LADIES’ GAMES
POSITION OF TEAMS
MOMONA v. HIGH SCHOOL. These teams fought a very hard game at Logan Park, good tackling being a feature. Time after time good forward rushes were successfully held up by consistent back play, the School players doing very well against their more experienced opponents. It was a very even go right up to the final stages, when just prior to the whistle Miss Barnes netted a good goal to put Momona in the lead. It had been a wellcontested game, but the harder grounds told its tale, and the players were all in, by the time the final whistle found Momona 2 High School 1 I Mr R. S. Wallace ably controlled the game. KINGS v. ’VARSITY, The dry ground gave us better hockey in‘this match, when Kings won decisively against the ’Varsity eleven. At no stage in the game did ’Varsity look dangerous; the backs lay too far back and allowed Kings to make all the running. The Blue rearguard did not play up to expectations, and the Kings vanguard, finding them quite often out of position, kept up an incessant attack on the ’Varsity goalmouth. Miss Johnson again played in the centre half position, but had she occupied her position between the posts, a draw would have been a good indication of the run of the play. The Kings forwards played very well together, R. Warburton, Miss Cumberbeach, and Miss Holden well backed up by H. Robinson, E. Ellis, and M. Fleming, were outstanding players in the winning side. ’Varsity fought hard all the way, but Kings were definitely superior. Kings 4 ’Varsity 0 Mr T. Moore was a capable referee. OTAGO v. DUNEDIN. This game was played on Logan Park No. 1, and was very well contested. In the first half both sides were striving to score, but off-side play on Otago’s part spoiled many good chances. After some good passing Miss
Stevens netted for Otago. (Shortly after this Otago set up a good passing bout, which resulted in Miss Hastings netting. Half-time was called shortly after. Dunedin played up better in the second half, but could not finish off their play. Otago missed often through over-eagerness, but certainly gave the better display, and were able to score two more goals. The final whistle found the score:—, Otago ... 4 Dunedin 0 Mr D. Miller was the referee.
