VARSITY TRIUMPH

SOUTHERN LOSE BY 8 TO 3 CLOSE GAME AT CARISBROOK A crowd of over 7,000 was bn tip-toe of excitement at Carisbrook to see the game between two of the leading teams —Southern and ’Varsity A—and, after a well-contested match, the Students won by Bto 3. Southern had the greater share of possession, and threw the ball about freely, but had little thrust in their movements. .With superior speed and finish, the Varsity backs were often able to turn defence into attack. Southern forwards were on top for most of the game. The teams were;— University A.—Jolly, Jones. Uttley, Dunne, Fookes, Page, M'Arthur, Laney, Lopdell, Steveuson-Wnght, Pickard, Simmers, Green, Chapman, and Hamilton. Southern.—D. Trevathan, Turnbull, Smith, Black, T. Trevathan, Sutherland, Simon, Inglis, Hore, McDonald, Aitken, Moreland, Edwards, Niven, and Neiper. ’Varsity were the first to attack after their . kick-off, but a free kick gave Southern relief. A well-placed kick sent ’Varsity to the other side of halfway. From a scrum ’Varsity hacks attempted to get going, but the passing went astray, D. Trevathan securing and finding touch. A free kick sent Southern back, but the Southern forwards broke through,‘the hacks attempting passing, but not getting far. Smith was caught by Uttley in another passing bout. Southern forwards pressed to beyond the ’Varsity twenty-five, a free kick giving the Students relief. From just past halfway Black attempted a free kick, but went short.

Both sides were trying to open up the game, and when the ’Varsity backs opened up at the Southern twenty-five Dunne was sent away. He got past Black, but was brought down by the Southern full-back. Sutherland tackled Dunne well at the end of another passing bout. Black in turn was caught at the end of Southern passing. Another bright Southern passing movement ended when Dunne put Black over.

Southern were doing the bulk of the attacking at this stage, the forwards playing well together, out the Students were always dangerous. A pass to Turnbull went astray when the winger was in a good position. Smith kicked through when Southern were attacking, and Jolly fielded well and ran up to start passing which spelled danger. It was stopped at the Southern twentyfive, and the_ defenders were given a free kick which shifted play back to ’Varsity territory. Southern were getting the greater share of the ball, but found the opposing defence sound. A free kick by Trevathan just missed. Simon returned the ’Varsity free kick to touch near the corner, and from the throw-in the ball went over the line. Jolly forcing in the nick of time as a Southern man chased the ball over. Southern backs attempted passing again, but Black, after a good run, was caught by Dunne from behind. The Southern full-back saved well with a kick to touch with two ’Varsity meu charging at him. There was- some excitement when Turnbull was sent away. He beat Jones, passed Jolly, but then, with a clear run in, seemed to hesitate, and was pulled down from behind. Then D. Trevathan goaled a free kick to give Southern a lead. Southern 3, ’Varsity A 0. 'The next incident was a brilliant hreak-away from' a scrum by M'Arthur, who broke through the Southern defence in a fine straight run. As ho was pulled down by the Southern full-back he threw the ball out. It was taken by Smith, who found touch, M'Arthur, from the ensuing play, found touch at the Southern corner, hut half-time was called, with the score:— Southern 3 ’Varsity A 0 Southern forwards opened strongly in the second spell, but several free kicks lost them ground. ' Smith and Turnbull raced up the side line, the latter being pushed into touch. Again Southern attacked, the forwards more than holding their own with the Blue pack, who were not playing well enough together. Several free kicks in succession were awarded against Southern, the Students finding the line. Then Jolly goaled another free kick to equalise. ’Varsity A 3, Southern 3. Southern backs failed to get through the defence in passing. Simon found the line at the corner with a wellplaced kick, and from the throw-in Southern backs essayed another bout, hut a knock-on stopped the effort. There was a lot of scrummaging m ’Varsity territory. Sutherland punted through in the nest bout, the ball going over the line and Jolly forcing. The play took a sensational turn. Page cut in splendidly, and Uttley .and Dunne carried on, the latter running over at the corner and round behind the posts for a good try. Jolly converted, ’Varsity AB, Southern 3.

Southern ■ attacked again, hut handling by the backs was not crisp enough to take them through. A ’Varsity counter-attack went deep into Southern territory, Fookes being pushed into touch. Jones made a strong run at the end of passing, and was forced out at the corner just in time. T. Trevathan went off injured, his place at fiveeighth bci g taken by his brother. M'Kerrow • aon as full-back. Dunne was bmiic nvn by the full-back at the end oi 'Varsity passing; Southern were not now having the territorial advantage they had had formerly, the ’Varsity forwards playing better, and giving their backs more of the ball. Black was again caught by Dunne when Southern backs opened out and in the next bout Smith kicked, Jolly marking near his line, and finding touch near halfway with his kick, .lolly again marked in the face of a Southern attack, and found touch. Dunne went off at this stage with an injured knee, Watt coming on to replace him. With ten minutes to go, Southern stove hard to break through, but found the defence hard to penetrate. Jolly and Fookes cleared well when Southern were attacking. Trevathan went wide with a free kick. Turnbull made a strong run for the corner, Jones grassing him in time. Then Trevathan attempted a pot, but tbe ball did not vise, Jolly forcing, in the last few minutes Southern attacked strongly, but again their handling got them nowhere, and ’Varsity had shifted play to halfway when time was called, with the score:— ’Varsity A ... 8 Southern 3 Mr W. Jenkins was referee.
