'THE DOVER ROAD’
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights of this week the Otago University Dramatic Society will give three performances of A. A. Milne’s comedy, ‘ The Dover Road.’ in His Majesty’s Theatre. The story is typical of this popular writer, taking place in an amateur reformatory for eloping couples on the road from London to Dover, where the victims of hasty matrimonial decisions are lured and detained by a Mr Latimer until they begin to wonder if they are not only making an indiscreet removal from the frying pan to the fire. The cast is a small one, and therefore well suited to the requirements of amateur repertory societies. Miss Bessie Thomson, who has been engaged as producer, has had only six principals to train, and as the rehearsals have been frequent and thorough, it may be expected that there will be a creditably high standard of acting. Those who saw ‘ Rope ’ last year will need no convincing that University students are capable of as polished and confident an interpretation of good drama as many a professional company. In ‘ Rope ’ they dealt with mystery drama of the philosophic variety. In ‘ The Dover Road ’ they deal with whimsical comedy. The players include Misses Isobel Newlands, Margot Garrett, B. Mercer, T. Rae, and T. Ross, and Messrs Russell Napier, Lester Moller, Bruce M’Kenzie, Wyvern De Clive Lowe, A. M. Finlay, and G. F. Hall.
