BIG ROAD RACE
CHRISTCHURCH TO DUNEDIN AND BACK [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. A proposal to hold the biggest road race ever held in the dominion was discussed at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and- 1 Axemen’s Union, the race to be from Christchurch to Dunedin and back again, and the total distance (approximately 500 miles) to be run in four stages. The first stage will be from Christchurch to Timaru, the second stage Timaru to Dunedin, the third stage Dunedin to Waimate, and the fourth stage Waimate to Christchurch. If the race eventuates it will be held early in September, so that a team of six riders may represent the dominion in the big centenary £I,OOO road race of 1,100 miles, to bo decided in Victoria next October. The Centenary Council has granted a sum of money so that accredited New Zealand riders may be sent to compete in the centenary race. A deputation was appointed to visit the Otago and South Canterbury Centres to ascertain what support would be forthcoming from those centres.
