‘SHANGHAI MADNESS* AND ‘ONLY YESTERDAY ’ , ‘ Shanghai : Madness,’ which will he the chief attraction of a double-feature programme which will be commenced at' the King Edward Theatre to-day, is a romance, laid amid the intrigue, the adventure, the thrills, and the excitement of Shanghai. Spencer Tracy has the leading role of an impulsive ,naval officer. Fay Wray has the' principal feminine role, and promises to outdo her performances in ‘King Kong ’ and ‘ Ann Carver’s Profession? . The film teems with action and is set against colourful, ever-shifting __ backgrounds as.it traces the adventures of an officer through the naval .station, aristocratic foreign clubs, native quarters. It takes you aboard a gun-run-ning boat up the Hoang Ho Rivef, through the hazards of battling armies, and to a spectacular attack upon a medical mission. , The Story of a woman’s great love for a man transcending_ the hardships and struggles of life is given a splendid interpretation by a well-balanced cast in ‘ Only Yesterday ’ the other picture. Margaret Sullavan is an actress new to. Dunedin picture-gocrs, but such an introduction as she achieves in Only Yesterday ’ should rank_ her as a firm favourite. Playing opposite. John Boles,' Margarbt Sullavan demonstrates _ the distinction of her acting, which is ■of quite an unusual type. _ Her capacity for imparting deep emotion with slight gestures is especially notable.
