OBITUARY
REV. GUY THORNTON As briefly recorded yesterday, the death occurred on Wednesday of the Rev. Guy Dynevor Thornton, of Fowlcls Avenue, Sandringham, formerly chaplain to tho Main Body New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. Mr Thornton, who was sixty-one years of age, was a sou of a former headmaster of To Ante College, Hawke’s Bay. As a young man lie joined the Baptist Church, and entered its ministry. After a period in Auckland and Christchurch, he went to Ohakune, which was then in its pioneering stage. There he built a church and did notable evangelistia .work among bushfellers, millnands, and settlers over a wide area of tho southern King Country. Later he was in charge of churches at Morrinsville and Whangarei. Within a week of tho declaration of war Mr Thornton offered his services as chaplain. Ho was appointed to the Auckland Mounted Rifles, and left with the Main Body. His health broke down under the strain of his work among the troops in Cairo, and he made two voyages to New Zealand in charge of returning drafts* After being invalided, he went to England, and, with Mrs Thornton, ho conducted evangelistic missions at Y.M.C.A. centres and churches of various denominations in all parts of the country. In 1921 he returned to New Zealand, and, after a further period of illness, was four years in charge of the South Dunedin Baptist Church. Having suffered a further breakdown in health, he retired, and made his , home in Auckland. ■ Mr Thornton is survived by his wif« and two daughters—Mrs R. Bradley, of Epsom, and Mrs F.G. Platt, of Onehunga.
