COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council. was held at Portobello yesterday, the chairman (Cr H. Macandrew) presiding over the following:—Crs J. Cross, W. D. Stewart, J. T. Irvine, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, J. Hellyer, R. Brunton, and D. J. S. Robertson. RATES STRUCK. The following rates wero struck for the year:— General Rate.—Otago .Heads Riding, Id in the £; Portobello Riding, lid; Broad Bay Biding, lid; North-east Harbour Riding, lid; Tomahawk Riding, lid; Highcliff Riding, lid; Sandymount Riding, lid. Annually recurring special rates:— North-east Harbour street lighting, id; Portobello street lighting, Jcl; Helensburgh special works, id. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary of the Education Board wrote advising that the North-east Harbour School Committee had forwarded to the board a letter from the Tennis Club agreeing to bear any expense incurred in connection with the lease, or in the matter of drainage of the land to be taken over by the Tennis Club. —It was decided to have the lease prepared. A letter was received from the secrotftiy of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals asking that the trough at' Cadzo’s gate be P u t in proper order and filled with water. From reports received, this' trough required cleaning out and a little attention to put it in proper order.—A member remarked that the present trough had been in use for thirty years, and after a short discussion it was decided to install a concrete trough. The Treasurer of the Lucky Cat Art Union forwarded a cheque, for.£l2 to be used for the relief of distress at Portobello. This grant had been sanctioned by the Minister of Internal Affairs. Ilscoivsdt The Unemployment Board advised that it had been informed by the State Forest Service' that there was a surplus of tree stocks and that supplies would be mad© available to local bodies as directed by the board, which was, desirous that, where possible, _ local bodies having suitable areas avail themselves of the offer, and utilise a programme: for the utilisation of unemployed labour in preparing the ground and planting the trees; —Received. The Secretary of the North-east Harbour Ratepayers and Householders’ Association wrote re the need for public conveniences at Macandrew Bay.—The chairman was appointed to discuss the question with the Ratepayers’ Association and report to the next meeting of the council. The Secretary of the Otakou branch of the woman’s division of the Farmers Union wrote reminding the council of a remit fqrwarded in March of last year in which it was requested that a footpath be laid down on one side of the main road at Otakou. The road was metalled without regard for pedestrians, the writer stated, and as a result cornfort able walking was difficult.—The matter was left in the hands of the local member for the district and the engineer. , _ ~, . Messrs 0. Morns and G. W. Dick wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the road leading to their properties, and asked that it be metalled and the water tables cleaned out.— Referred to the engineer. A request that concrete pipes be laid below his property in place of the present culvert was received in a letter from Mr R. G. Wilson, of Otakou. The writer stated that the culvert had caved in and was gradually being undermined owing to the recent bad weather. He also asked that the road leading from his house on to a neighbour’s property bo attended to, as it was in a deplorable, condition.—Referred to engineer. Mr L. G. Penfold, of Waverley, wrote advising that Shannon road was in a bad state of repair. He requested that metal be spread on the roadway. —Referred to the engineer. Mr D. Weatherston, of Macandrew Bay, wrote drawing the attention of the council to the state of the entrance to his property at_ Cosy Dell. The writer 1 stated that in wet weather the water from the bank came down on to the flat portino of his property, making it little better than a swamp. He asked that the council remedy the present position.—Referred to the local member.
A member of the North-east Harbour School Committee wrote drawing attention to the road leading to _ the front gates of the school, and asking that a few yards of screenings be spread at the entrance.—Left in the hands of the local member. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1,260 16s Id were passed for payment. RANGER’S REPORT. The Ranger reported that during the past month, he had found eight head of cattle wandering on county roads.— The report was, adopted.,. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The County Engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) ' reported as follows on the work carried out during the month:— Otago Heads Riding.—The wall at the Harrington Point turning area had been completed. Maintenance work had been done on the highway, and maintenance metal spread where necessary . : Lupins had been cut back on the Otakou-Harrington Point road. ; Portpbello Riding.—The repair work to the sea wall on the Portobello to Lower Portobello section of the highway had been done. Further maintenance work had been done on the Portobello to Cape Saunders road._ Water tables iujd been cleaned on Kinnaird’s road. ... Broad Bay Riding.—Material cleaned from water tables on the Portobello Township roads had been carted to the tip. Under instructions from the electric power and light department of the City Council trees in Broad Bay which were considered a danger to the power wires had been felled and cleaned up. General surfacing work had been done in Broad Bay Township. North-east Harbour Riding.—Maintenance work had been done in Princes street, High street, and District road, Macandrew Bay. One culvert in District road was under repair. Maintenance work had been done in Larnach road, Waverley. Tomahawk Riding.—Surfacing work had been done in Luke’s road and on Glen street. Water tables had been cleaned on the highway and on SmaiU’s road. Maintenance metal had been spread on tho highway through the township. Highcliff Riding.—Water tables had been cleaned on the highway and some maintenance metal spread on the Anderson Bay to the cafe section. Water tables had been cleaned on Paradise road. Sandymount Riding.—Water tables had been cleaned on the highway. A light run of screenings had been spread on tho Seal Point road to prevent slipping in frosty weather. The report was adopted..
