KIWI SWIMMING CLUB

PRIZE-GIVING FUNCTION The annual prize-giving function of ilio Kiwi Club was' held in the Embassy Salon last night, the junior and intermediate members first being entertained at tea by the committee of the club. Over fifty were present at this gathering, and in presenting the prizes to the juniors' and intermediates the president (Mr Sam Brown) congratulated them on the excellent progress that had been made, and referred to an innovation that had been introduced bythe committee following a suggestion by the ladies’ captain (Miss M. Boulton). This was the award of special certificates to the promising young members of the club who attended to their training and attended the club hour regularly; The youngsters were entertained by Mr H. M. Eggers, ventriloquist, and his doll “ Curly.” Masters Jackie Miller and Keith Cameron also provided an excellent exhibition of dancing. The music was supplied by Mr C. J. Leeden and Mrs H. Jarvis.

Later in the evening the club held its annual dance, at which there was an attendance of about 120 members and friends. The music for the dancing was supplied by Fraser’s Majestic Orchestra, the function being one of the most enjoyable and successful the club Las yet held. Miss Phyllis Eckhoff and Miss Kitty Eckhoff provided a bright interlude with one of their displays of specialty dancing. Messrs A. Findlay and Sara Brown were the M.C.s. The season’s trophies were presented by the president, and the opportunity was also taken by the committee of the club to make a presentation to Miss M. Boulton (the ladies’ captain) in recognition of her splendid work as coach during the season. Appreciative reference was made to Miss Boulton’s valuable work in the instruction of the junior members and to the enthusiasm she always showed for the club’s activities. Mr P. Boulton responded on behalf of liis daughter. The success of the function was due in no small measure to the work of a very capable ladies’ committee. Matliieson; Murdoch Memorial Cup (club diving championship), Reg. Geddes; Sutton Cup (most points in handicap events), P. E. Matliieson: Vernon Smith junior boys’ cup (most points in junior boys’ handicaps). Roy Geddes ; y ernon Smith junior girls’ cup (most points in junior girls’ handicaps). Miss C. Knowles: S. Brown Cup (junior novice handicaps). Miss -lean jenvey; S. Brown Cup (runner-up junior novice handicaps), I?. M'Kernan; trophy (second club harbour race), Miss M, Boulton. Improvement cups were awarded as follow: —Senior. A. J. Leeden; ladies. Miss V. Drearer; intermediate boys, H. Sheppard ; intermediate girls. Miss N. Donogbue; junior boys, C. Lawrence; junior girls. Miss V. Gardiner; novices. A. E. Jenvey; elub junior novice handicap (club carnival “ medals)— Mis'ses N. and E. Wilson (equal) 1, D. Clapperton J. -,- . . r> ; Cups presented by Mrs W. Lang and Mr W. Stracban respectively were

awarded to S. W. Jarvis, of the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club, .who had won the 100yds and 22.0yds invitation handicaps at tho Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival. Certificates were awarded to the following junior members:— First class: Dennis Clapperton, William Dyson, G. M’Donald, and Owen Pearson. Second class: Misses V. Gardiner, E. M'Kemon, E. Gardiner, Joan Jenvey, Masters J. Buchanan, R. Dick, and B. Booth. Learners; Misses M. Madden, R. M'Allan, H. Moore, W. Mooney, M. Miller, I. Miller, J. Stevens, M. Quennell, L. Erridge, and 6. Laing, Masters K. Cameron, J. Miller, and M. Miller.
