COMMUNITY SINGING

The unbounded interest taken by all sections of the_ public in the weekly community singing sessions has become so firmly established that many people cannot gain admission. Such was the case to-day, when the full-house sign was displayed before the proceedings had commenced. Whether due to the practice gained in the two previous sings or to the admirable leadership of Mr H. P. Desmoulins, this week’s hour of song was the best yet held, not only on the score of quality in voice, but also from the numerical and financial aspects. Variation was added to the proceedings by the inclusion of a surprise item of a most plaesing type—the appearance of one of Dunedin s foremost baritone singers, Mr Denis Dowling, of Ranfurly, who gave a pleasing rendering of ‘Good-bye from 5 White Horse Inn.’ Enjoyable cornet and piano items were presented by the popular Philip sisters, who were heard in ‘ Sunshine of Your Smile and ‘Mother Machree.’ During the proceedings a telegram was received from the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox), who is at present in Wanganui, stating that radio reception was excellent. Several promised 'gifts were offered from listeners, one of whom had previously sent twenty-one rabbits from Central Otago. These were quickly sold during the session, as were gifts of clothing. As a result of the sing the mavor’s unemployment fund will benefit to the extent of £9 9s 6d.
