EASTERN MARKETS

NOT A GREAT SCOPE [Pan United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 14. Mr R. Boulter, the British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, interviewed in regard to Eastern markets for New Zealand produce, said he thought the Japanese would always bo customers for New Zealand wool, but he could not see that any considerable market could be found in Japan for our other products, meat and dairy produce for example. The foreign consumer’population was very small, and he thought its wants in the matter of meat, butter, and cheese were fairly provided for. He was not prepared to speak of China and Hongkong from first hand knowledge. Japan, he pointed out, was already an exporter of milk products, instancing condensed milk, which had a ready sale if cheap enough, among the Chinese. As to Singapore, he pointed out that the natives preferred their own and the Malay bean and nnt oil products, so the outlet for New Zealand butter was not promising, and cheese they did not care about. Mr Boulter, who arrived in New Zealand a few days ago, direct from Singapore, was for some time before on consular duties, in Japan, and subsequently was commercial secretary to the British Embassy at Tokio.
