FANCIERS’ CLUB
ANNUAL SHOW OPENED LARGE ENTRIES OF POULTRY The annual show of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club is an event in the year to which many citizens look forward with a great deal of interest, and, judging by the numbers and quality of the entries that have come into the Brydone Hall, this year’s display promises in a very impressive manner to meet public expectations. The show was officially opened to-day, and will remain open until Saturday—a day specially devoted to the entertainment of children. The judging this morning was eonlined to exhibits representing the feathered world, the poultry, pigeons, and canaries all being clqsely inspected and awarded a-ticket or passed by. as their merits warranted. The dogs, cats, and children’s pets will not be judged' until to-morrow morning. The entries in the poultry sections are well up in comparison with last year, and it' is anticipated that these birds will attract much public admiration. The fancy pigeons are down a little in numbers since last year, but the Homer variety remain almost the same. The canary entries, although slightly down numerically, make a most attractive showing, the quality being well up to standard. Mr W. Tibbies, judge of the exhibition poultry, old English game, and bantams, said that the exhibition breeds were rather disappointing, the quality being just fair. The showing of old English game, however, was exceedingly good, this being accounted for by tho fact that the championship prize for the old English game mal.e section was allotted by the South Island Poultry Association. The winner of this was an exceptionally fine pile cock, which also’ won a special prize for the best light fancy breed. The winner of the blue ribbon for the best_ of the opposite sex was an outstanding pile game hen. Some very good duckling game was exhibited, and altogether the class was fairly “ hot.” The bantams were good, the exhibits being well up +o the standard of past years. The judge of the Yorkshire canaries (Mr J. A. Morris) said that the birds examined by him were a fairly even lot, and in type and feather were an improvement on tho coarse bodies and long-feathered birds which had been too prominent in the last four seasons. It was gratifying to note that exhibitors were paving more attention to fineness of feather and true Yorkshire type, and it was to be hoped that this improvement would continue, as coarse Yorkshires would never pay their way on the show bench. The best bird_ in the open class was a fine, upstanding specimen of true Yorkshire type, but at rimes he failed a little in wing carriage. The best bird in the unflighted classes, afine clear yellow ben, was true to type and beautifully drawn, with the best of bead, legs, and length. It could he faulted n little in thigh feather. Tho Norwich canaries, said the
judge, did not constitute" an outstanding section, as many of tho birds failed in quality of feather. The winning birds, however, were a very even lot, and presented some difficulty in separating for special prizes. The season had not been a good one for the birds, hence the softness in feather of some of the exhibits. The best bird was a grand big one of true Norwich type, but failed a little in feather, and consequently was beaten for the best canary award in the show.
