Orders hive already been placed in glass-mak-Hg centres in Lancashire, Yorkshire, ■mil elsewhere to the extent of 2500,000. , The reason for the change goes be- ■ yond a desire on the part of the brewers to obtain uniformity among bottles,- , and has its foundation in a mechanical > problem which occupied the attention of j brewery research authorities for some ! lime. | A TECHNICAL PROBLEM. 1 With the increase in the popularity ol British beer abroad has come the difficult problem of ensuring that beer 'cspat.clu-d to foreign countries reached ,s destination in the'peak of condition. In order to combat the difficulties caused by climatic and other conditions brewers turned to pasteurisation. The results were so encouraging that the experiment received universal approval, and pasteurisation has become an os- . senhiai part of the bottling process for export purpose's. In order to pasteurise it is. of course, ■cecssary to apply a good deal of heat. i ! ccr is incompressible, and on expansion by only a few degrees of heat enormous pressure is exerted. The result was a big increase in overhead costs dim to broken bottles.
REDUCING LOSSES. . The ! novv bottle is the solution to the difficulty. By adopting a new design, scientifically constructed to withstand the pressure exerted by the pasteurisation process, it is hoped to overcome what has previously been a, problem of grave importance to brewers. The new bottle is amber-coloured, ft. is officially described as a “ doublepurpose Imperial quart ehampagneshapo screw-mouth beer bottle/’ ° Donble-purpd.se ” indicates that it is designed to servo both for pasteurisation and ordinary bottling. At present the new bottle is being "constructed in the quart size only. IXTERCHANGEABLE AMONG BREWERS. It is not intended that the name of the brewer shall bo stamped on the bottles, as they will become interchangeable among the London brewers. Distinguishing marks will consist of three stars moulded at equal distances round the bottle neck in such a position that when filled to the top of the stars the bottle will contain 4(Joz. The record order will mean work for q, year for 500 glass factory workers.
