TRANSPORT COMPETITION
ELIMINATION BRINGS HIGHER CHARGES [Per United Press Assocurior 1 ROTORUA, June 13. Criticism of the action of the transport licensing authorities in the elimination of the competitive services operating for the carriage of farmers’ requirements in various parts of the "ourity, • and thereby increasing the freiglit costs to the farmer, was expressed at a meeting of the Rotorua County Council to-day. 'The chairman (Mr H. P. lord) said that if settlement was to be encouraged a monopoly for cartage should not be let in two or three services. The farmer should be able to choose the cheapest market. At present it appeared ijs though freight charges would be increased considerably. It was pointed out by other councillors that the operators refused licenses in the Rotorua County were for feeder services operating to the railhead, and the opinion was expressed .that providing thfc operators complied with the ordinary traffic regulations there was no reason why they should not be allowed to run. It was decided that the council’s inspector should place its views before the conference of traffic inspectors to be held in Wellington next week.
