THE SHARE MARKET

DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE Three parcels of Dominion Fertiliser shares changed hands at 18s this morning, while tho fully-paid issue of Southland Frozen Meats had business at 70s, an increase of 3s on yesterday’s buying offer. Australasias provided the only buyer in the banking section, in which there was an easier market. Insurance stocks were practically neglected. Westport Coals have persistent inquiry at 17s. but otherwise interest has waned iu coal shares. Improved offers were made for Southland Frozen Meat shares, following business at 70s, but no more were for sale. Dominion Rubbers had a closer market, but no other change was noticeable in this section. Quiet conditions prevailed iu the gold raining section. ° Government Loans still remain very firm. SALES. IMPORTS INTO UNITED STATES Under a' regulation which came into force on May 10, United States authorities require that marking of imported goods shall be more stringent. Section 304 of the United States Tariff Act provides that every article imported into_ the United States, and its immediate containers, and the package in which such article is imported, shall be marked, stamped, branded, or labelled, in legible English words, in a conspicuous place, in such manner as to indicate the country of origin of such article, in accordance with such regulations as the Secretary of the Treasury may prescribe. Such marking, stamping, branding, or labelling is to be as nearly indelible and permanent as the nature of the article will permit. Provision exists for certain exemptions from the regulations when it is deemed that the article in incapable of being marked, or that expense of marking is economically prohibitive of importation, or that labelling of the immediate container will reasonably indicate the country of origin of the* article.

DULL CONDITIONS LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE Dull conditions prevailed on the Stock Exchange recently,, with some decline in prices in most sections. One exemption was South " African gold mining shares, which were active on the rise in the price of gold and the expectation that the majority of companies will ha able to materially increase their dividend distributions. The gilt-edged market has been ; pressed, British funds all showing declines. Australians were also slightly, lower. /1 An indication of the state of the market was afforded by the latest loan issue of Southern Rhodesia for £2,750,000 at 3i per cent. (1955-65), issued at 97J. Contrary to recent experiences the list of cash subscriptions remained open the full time. It is expected that the underwriters will be saddled with a considerable portion of the loan.
