Air and Mrs S. C. .Sutherland gave a most delightful dance at their- home in Claremont street, on Saturday evening in honour of Aliss Joan Fraser. The hostess wore a most uncommon frock of geranium lace, featuring the new high neck-lino. Aliss Fraser's frock was of black and white cheek taffeta with* wide epaulettes and silver 'ornaments, and Aladame Winnie Fraser wore a gown ot parchment satin with a quaint velvet wrap. To Help the Children’s Health Camp. The picture ‘ln a Alonastery Garden ’ will be shown in the Empire Theatre on Sunday evening, the' total proceeds to be given towards a fund for a new building for the helpers at the health camp at Waikouaiti. The Empire Theatre management has given the theatre entirely free, and‘the Film Association has given the picture, which is a charming one, featuring some delightful musical items. It is pleasing to note that the St. Kilda Band gladly cancelled a concert which they had arranged in order to leave the night free.
Mrs West-Watson Entertained. On Alonday afternoon a delightful party was held at “ The Bungalow,” Ashburn Hall, when Airs A. R. Falconer, diocesan ‘ president of the Alothers’ Union, entertained Airs Wcst.Watson, wife of the Bishop of Christchurch and dominion president of the Alothers’ Union; also Airs Fitchett, wife of the Bishop of Dunedin, members of the Union Council, and the wives of the clergy. The hostess, after introducing the guest of honour, welcomed Airs West-AVatson as the head of the Alothers' Union in New Zealand. Jn her reply Airs West-Watson spoke of the joy it was to her to have this opportunity of meeting the workers in this great organisation. “ The Alothers’ Union,” she said. “is primarily a teaching society, and, apart from its own mission work, it is not desirable to use the society for collecting purposes. To guard the boys and girls in the homo is better than to trust to the enforcement of laws against existing evils.” Airs Webb,- of Gore, thanked the speaker on behalf of the union, and Airs .Falconer welcomed Mrs Fitchett. who, as the wife of the bishop, is now the patroness of the Alothers’ Union. A dainty afternoon tea was served in the dining room, at the conclusion of which Mrs B. Fulton paid a graceful tribute to Airs Falconer’s wonderful hospitality.

Groat success attended the afternoon tea concert organised by Mrs J. Carroll arid Mrs M. H. Dawson to assist the charity ball supper fund. The concert was hold in the O.K. Cafe on Monday, and a dainty tea was followed by a delightful programme by the following artists: —Pianoforte solo, Mrs R. J. Irvine; songs, Miss Hendry and Mr T. Kennedy; recitation, Miss Lottie M'Clintock; and solo dance, Miss Bryan. Signora Stella and Mrs R. J. Irvine played the accompaniineuts in their usual' finished style. The National Council of Women hold its monthly meeting on Thursday last •in the Women’s Club Rooms,- Moray place. A preliminary business meeting was held, at which special consideration was given to the formation of sub-commit-tees. Interest centred chiefly round woman’s relation to the nnemploynient tax, the need for her interest in civics, and her position and status us a do■mestic worker. This was followed bv a happy liour or more of social entertainment and intercourse. Miss Logie, who represents the Musicians’ Society on the council, had arranged for various musical items. Miss Stella Bayley contributed two violin solos and Miss Marjorie M‘Dowell and Miss Ruth Moore a pianoforte duet. Vocal items contributed were two solos by Miss Margaret Beattie and two duets by Misses Marjorie Irish'and Grace I he accompanists were Miss Louie and Miss ,'Modn Paine. A dainty, supper and conversation brought a happy gathering to a closf. . Of Basketball Interest. This promises to bo Otago’s big year in basketball matters, for the 11134 dominion tournament is to bo hold in Dunedin. Already local interest is high, unci many are tile plans which are being made to” kindle enthusiasm. Interest for this week ''centres round the evening tournament, to be held in the Drill Mall on Thursday. Entries have been received from men’s teams, as well ns from many ladies’ teams, in the city; the games are to be played on a handicap basis, and should provide excitement and thrills enough for any enthusiast. There are two courts at the Drill Hall, the gallery provides excellent vantage for the onlooker, and, with some of the best A grade teams entering, basketball of a high standard should be witnessed. Arrangements are in the hands of a strong committee, and it is hoped that this, the first venture of the association to win public support, will meet with the success it deserves. Foresters’ Bail. One of the principal events of Show Week was the combined Foresters’ ball, held in the Early Settlers’ and Pioneer Halls on Monday, Juno 4. This was the third annual ball conducted by the courts of Dunedin, and, as previously, was a successful and enjoyable function, some 350 couples being present. Music was dispensed by Stewart’s Imperial and the Savonia Dance Bands, and a judicious blending of old and new dances catered for all tastes. Among those present were Mrs M.
