MOUNT CARGILL ROAD
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir.—ln a local of Saturday niglit’s issue I notice that Mr Ansell has approached the Main Highways Board to have a white line painted as a guide on awkward places of this dangerous highway. This will be a much-needed improvement, and will tend to make for safer motoring. But a much greater need in my opinion is the blind corners that sbount and require widening on the top of this road, and also nearer Waitati. We all know that this road has been wonderfully improved to what it used to be a few years ago, but why do our Otago motorists not advocate having these dangerous corners widened ? Thousands of pounds are taken from the motorists every year in taxation, and surely we are entitled to have a portion of this money spent in making this road safer. The cost would be small, and would more than compensate for the anxiety of those using the road regularly. Compare this part of the road with the splendid improvement from Normanby to the Brown House, and it is a wonder to me that there are not more than the known six accidents which occurred in the last fortnight. We have a live body of motorists in Dunedin, and it is time that they got together and demanded this muchneeded improvement. The present condition would not be tolerated anywhere but in Otago. Now that Mr Ansell is moving, don’t stop at a white line; go further, and have these corners removed, and give ns at least a greater margin of safety.—l am, etc.. Hai.f Measure. June T2.
