ROYAL EQUESTRIAN
TYPE OF HORSE LIKED . TALL AND FREE JUMPER. LONDON. May 28. In view of reports that Australia is arranging for the Duke of Gloucester to have ample opportunities to indulge in his favourite recreation of horse riding, inquiries were made in authoritative circles concerning his taste and preferences. The Duke is not heavy, but long in the leg, and prefers a horse of a minimum height of 16 hands. One of the best hunters he possessed was over 17 hands, but it was exceptional, as it is rare to find the necessary quality in a horse of such size. His Royal Highness has always tried to obtain hunters which can really gallop, partly because it is almost impossible properly to see a hunt in. Leicestershire on a slow horse, and partly because the Duke is always on the lookout for a horse capable of winning the point-to-point race at the end of the hunting • season. The Dube for the same reasons always likes a free-jumping horse, one that jumps easily and naturally in bis stride.
