MAUNGANUI PAYS OFF
MAKURA W RE-EMTER SERVICE [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 11. This afternoon the cooks and stewards of the Union Company’s 11.M.5. Maunganui, which had arrived at 7 a.m, from Sydney, gave notice to the company, and the vessel’s crew will be paid off to-morrow. A call is to be made to-morrow morning by the Union Company for cooks and stewards to man the Makura. The Makura has been laid up at Wellington for. a month for overhaul and survey. This morning she came out of clock, and after adjusting her compasses berthed at the Clyde quay wharf. She is to resume her running in the San Francisco mail service, and is scheduled -to leave here on Wednesday for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. Before the Maunganui left Sydney last Thursday'a number of her cooks and stewards, whose homes are in Sydney, were paid off, as the vessel was to be laid up at Wellington for four weeks for overhaul and survey;. This led to the vessel’s departure being delayed for an hour. The men who had been paid off, it was stated, refused to leave the ship, as they desired to come on to Wellington to be paid off here and then taken back to Sydney. They would thus have obtained an extra fortnight’s pay. Finally the men were persuaded to leave the Maunganui after the vessel’s departure had been delayed for about an hour.
