OBITUARY
MR F. Z. D. FERRIMAN An Ashburton Press Association telegram records the death of Mr Frederick Zaccheus Duckett Ferriman, aged seventy-eight, philanthropist, Prohibitionist, social worker, and friend of returned soldiers. The deceased, a prominent Anglican churchman, was born in London and spent his early, years before the mast. Settling in Ashburton in 1878, ho was for twentyfour years a member of the Borough Council and deputy mayor for. ten years. He was a member of the War Relief Committee, a life member of the R.S.A., vice-president of the New. Zealand Alliance and P.P.A., and a; member of the Christchurch Synod for many years. During the war he gavo £12,000 to the patriotic fund and since had spent many thousands, mainly , in assisting returned men. He leaves a widow and a family of two sons and one daughter.
MR J. S. TEMPLE The death occurred at Christchurch! of Mr Joseph Stephenson Temple, aged 53, well known in sporting and musical circles and vice-president of the Avon-, side Tennis Club. The deceased was a former member of the Christchurch' Football Club.—Press Association. ' \ MR F. BASTINGS A very old resident in Otago, having come hitherto seventy-two years ago, Mr Frederick Bastings, who died yesterday at his residence in Forbury road, was known to thousands in this part- of the dominion. He was bom in London in 1843, was taken to Australia by his parents in 1851, and came to Otago in 1862 as one of the many Victorians who were attracted by the' gold mining rushes.- His brother; Horace and William came shortly afterwards. Their digging at and about! Queenstown and the Dunstan not proving very profitable, the three brothers returned to Dunedin and took over, control of the Robin Hood Hotel in Arthur street. Two months later Frederick and Horace moved to Law-, rence, where they remained for three! years. Frederick then became licenses of the Kawarau Hotel at Cromwell, but sold out after eight months and took the White Horse Hotel at Milton* where he earned on for thirty-three years, becoming mayor for two terms, also chairman of the Domain Board* chairman of the School Committee* and a vestryman of St. John’s Anglican Church. Bowling was his pastime. Ho was one’of the foundation members of the Milton Bowling Club, _ formed on February 2, 1878, thus being the oldest country club in Otago, and second only to the Dunedin Club in the province. He was on the first Committee of Management, . and a few: months later took up the dual position of secretary mjd treasurer. After coming to Dunedin to live in retirement he kept up his connection with the game and was for awhile a member of the Caversham and Caledonian Clubs. While in Cromwell he became! a member of Lodge Kilwinning, S.C.* and after he took up his residence in Milton he and a few others resuscitated Lodge St. John, S.C., which had been in a state of lethargy for a time. He held various offices in the lodge, including the position pf treasurer, until he deft Milton. He was a member of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows for a' time, joining the lodge in Cromwell on clearance from Victoria, but later on dropped out of the order. In Milton he joined the Ancient Order of Foresters, and continued a member of. that organisation. In 1867 ho made a trip to Melbourne for his marriage to Miss Vickery, of that city. He. is survived by his widow, also by three sons and three daughters, all of _ whom are married. One of the sons live in Timaru, one in Oamaru,.and one in Dunedin, while two of the daughters reside in tho Bay of Plenty district and one. in Dunedin.
